OT: Download/Upload
OT: Download/Upload
I see a lot of references to "downloading" your data from the CPAP to a computer (for storage, display and printing, etc.)
By definition, isn't that an "upload"? The difference in the terms seems to rest on two concepts. A transfer from a local resource to a remote one is an "upload" (and the other direction is a "download" of course.) OR, a transfer from temporary storage to permanent storage is an upload (and vice-versa).
Since your CPAP and computer are probably both local, the first concept is moot. So, are you not "uploading" your data from temp (CPAP) storage to permanent (database on the PC) storage? And a transfer to the DME via a modem would be an upload under BOTH definitions.
I posed this to a few of my colleagues in the lunchroom (all engineers). They were still arguing when I left... I LOVE rousing the rabble!
Your thoughts?

It's a perceptional thing......
In my case, it's "downloading". My card reader sits on top of my computer case, so the card is physically in a HIGHER position than the hard drive.......the data travels down to the hard drive.

I vote for download too. I download from the data source (machine/card) to where the data will be used (my pc/software).

Re: OT: Download/Upload
You are doing both.
Download (copying FROM) your cpap machine. Upload(copying from the smart card TO the computer) the data to your computer.
It gets even more confusing in French where the same word télécharger is used for both and when you are trying to write documentation telling people to download a file, decrypt it and upload it you get massive confusion.

What is it when both machine and computer are on the same plane? And no they are not on an airplane!

Re: OT: Download/Upload
What a coincidence... I just crossloaded some data the other day! And my AHI seemed fine!
Re: OT: Download/Upload
Then we're agreed....no one knows what the hell a download is!

I think all that depends on whether you happen to live/shop downtown or uptown...

A computer science definition or this more colloquial definition:LinkC wrote: By definition, isn't that an "upload"?
http://www.google.com/dictionary?aq=f&l ... q=download
Since computers are now employed by the masses, I think the above definition supports that common expression when people say they have "downloaded" their CPAP data.
Re: OT: Download/Upload
I've never had clarity on that so I have avoided the use of the terms most of the time unless I knew the context made it clear what I was doing. Somehow I thought it had to do with giving (uploading) vs receiving (downloading). Guess I'll treat this like some political and religious debates, accepting that if the studied scholars don't agree, who am I to think I hold the golden egg? Fortunately, being correct on this one is a non issue - won't affect my life or non-career, so avoidance works just fine for me. But if it's a cut-and-dried definition, I'd don't mind getting with the program.
