My husband is getting discouraged

Post by alanweinstein76 » Sat Jan 02, 2010 8:31 am

My husband was just set up with a cpap several days ago and was not happy about using it to begin with but is now getting reluctant to continue to use it because he is waking up with bad headaches after using it. He is one who rarely ever gets headaches in the first place so this is a really big roadblock for him. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how he may be able to use the cpap w/o getting headaches? He is currently on a Resmed M Series auto-cpap & using a Swift LT mask.

Can you please post your equipment, pressure, etc so that we can offer you some assistance? Go into the Control Panel. Under Profile on the top tabs, choose Edit Equipment. Thank you.....you've come to the right place

That happened to me when I started therapy. I was given an unfitting mask, wrong pressure, and an impossible RT. I woke up with one of the worst headaches in my life, called the clinic and told them I would not continue using the machine before I spoke to the doctor again. It took 3 weeks, then I got to the doctor, was switched to an RT who listened to me, she set the machine up at a good pressure, gave me a fitting mask -- and things started looking up.

Call the doctor tell him about the headaches - they are not something anyone has to get used to. Therapy doesn't start out smoothly for many of us -- but it's worth fighting for.

Try to give us a many details as you can so we can try to help you figure out what's going on. It might as simple as the headger being pulled too tight, or him holding his head stiffly because of the gear.

But call the clinic too.

Welcome to the board - we're here because we've been where you are, and want to help the way others helped us. Ask anything you have a question about -- and read read read -- there's a lot to learn here.

O.

I got headaches because I was using the nasal prongs. It was BLOWING up my sinuses big time. I switch to a nasal pillow and it dispersed it enough it wasn't blowing my brains out directly.

Hope this helps.

There are many reasons for getting head aches early in cpap therapy. Several have already mentioned them to you. Another simple reason is that your husband's brain is getting a good supply oxygen again. Hopefully the head aches will soon disappear.

If it's an M Series your machine is a Respironics. You've come to the right place to get help. My husband is also the cpap user. Good luck.

Hi alanweinstein76

Does your husband know how many variables have to be right in order to get good therapy -

right pressure
right mask
right fitting of mask
right size of mask
no leaks
humidifyer tuned correctly
hose in right position
right pillow
is there leg movement during the night?
is there acid reflux present?

and for attitude - ie - a determination to succeed -

is he aware of the likely consequences of not succeeding with the cpap machine -

high blood pressure
heart disease
stroke
diabetes
depression
car accidents
other accidents
loss of memory and brain function
loss of libido
early death

These are all things that he now needs to be fully aware of, and this needs perseverance and practice.

It is not just a case of putting a mask on.

All the help he needs is here on the Forum, but he has to make the committment.

cheers
