card reader??
card reader??
Some quick, I hope, questions.
After my pathetic visit to the dr yesterday, I decided it would be cheaper and more efficacious for me to get a card reader... whatever that is. I have a Mac OS 10.5.8. What kind should I get and where would I get one?
What does DME stand for? I've seen it mean Durable Medical Equipment, but here people use it as if it were a person or company.

I can't address your first question about the Mac and card reader, but this thread may get you started with answers regarding that: viewtopic/t47700/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=46288&. I'm sure others will come along with more advice about that subject.
As to DME, that does stand for "durable medical equipment". We often use 'DME' around here as shorthand to mean a supplier of durable medical equipment. I know it's confusing, but it's quicker than typing 'DME supplier' each time.

Re: card reader??
A "DME" is the place you go to get your CPAP, mask, supplies, etc. This is USUALLY a separate company from your doctor. It is something like a pharmacy for medical supplies. Sometimes they are integrated into regular pharmacies. Sometimes they are part of your sleep lab, or doctor's office.
I'm not sure you can use the card reader with your Mac, since you told me the software will not install on your Mac. In that case, there is no sense in buying a card reader, since you can't install the software to utilize it. The "card reader" is the actual bit of hardware you plug your smart card into. The software is the part that actually READS the card and interprets the data.
I would be happy to read your card for you. You know how to contact me.
Hugs,
Barbara

Re: card reader??
Thank you, DreamOn.
I tried the link about the Mac and I saw the big NO. Then after that my eyes started to glaze over and all my mind registered was "blah blah blah, something really hard to do, blah blah blah."
I actually bought an HP little computer thingy in November just so I could do some Windows stuff, like audio books. I took it back after two days.
Thanks for trying.

Re: card reader??
Hi Babette,
When I was at the dr yesterday, I asked the receptionist if I could get a card reader and just read the stuff myself. She said, "No." and I said, "We both know I can." and we both laughed. I told her that I had a friend who would read it for me, thinking of you. Thank you.
Hmmm my neighbor has a Windows and maybe I can just stick my card reader on hers... No, wait, she just got a Mac. I'm on an all Mac street, now.

Re: card reader??
You can use a card reader and software on a Mac if you run Windows on the Mac. Assuming that you have an Intel based Mac, you can use BootCamp, Parallels, or VMware Fusion, among others, to virtualize Windows on your Mac. You can then install the software and reader. Hope this helps!

Re: card reader??
This is how tech savvy I am. One day at work a friend came over to use my microwave for some popcorn. I told her I had taped on the key pad the amount of time needed (having spent much time getting it to the exact second). She said, "Why don't you just use the popcorn button?" ???
And no matter how many youtube videos I watch, I still can't fold a fitted sheet.

LOL!
Maybe you have a techy friend that can help you get set up? Maybe the IT guy from work?

Re: card reader??
Go to an Apple store and tell them what you want to do.
If you tell them it's for your health, they might even do it for free. It will take someone who knows less than 10 mins. to get you all set up.
For a total of $100 I can go to the store every day for one year and get a 1 hr. one-to-one lesson. I don't go every day but I could. I make a list of all the things I would like to do and when the list gets big enough I go.

Re: card reader??
You know I have that one to one thing at the Apple Store. Maybe I should just get the card reader and take it there and have the guy there help me. I think they come out to the car and get the computer (I'd have to take the computer, because they tell me all kinds of cool stuff which I forget by the time I get to the parking lot).
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. {IMac 8,1}
So what's the name of card reader and where do I get one?

OCNorsk,
Just wanted to make sure that you realize that the Encore software will also need to be installed on your computer, as I don't think you've mentioned that. The card reader alone can't display the data card information to you. It only "relays" the information to the computer. The software interprets the information so you can view the results on your computer screen.

I don't know if you want to spend the money but iLugger.com makes a neat backpack for your computer. Much easier to lug into the store.OCNorsk wrote:You know I have that one to one thing at the Apple Store. Maybe I should just get the card reader and take it there and have the guy there help me. Re: card reader??
I ended up buying my Mako Card Reader (compatible with the Encore software with Smart Cards) for $54 plus $8.35 for shipping (but it was in my state so only 1 day UPS).
The price for that reader is all over the place. I missed out in an auction for it, so the $63 wasn't too bad, beats the 135.

Re: card reader??
So Encore is a software.
But it's Windows driven.
So I have to have something on my computer that will run Windows based software.
Right?
