Gall bladder pain and CPAP

Post by meusion » Tue Dec 15, 2009 5:22 pm

Hello,
I will be having my gall bladder taken out soon as I have been feeling a lot of pain and apparently it is no longer functioning. I have two questions, I have been trying to use my cpap when sleeping but it makes my pain a lot worse. Could the expansion of my lungs be causing trouble in that area? Second, for those who have had surgeries, do you take your cpap with you during recovery/sleeping time?
Thanks,
Heather

I know what you're going thru been there done that! last year! This was actually before I was dxed with OSA! however when I went to the ER because of the pain, they gave me dilaudid (really powerful narcotic) to kill the pain and I set off alarms everywhere with just half the dose! I ended up spending night in hospital because O2 was so low--as for the surgery goes--I'd definately take your cpap! Because i hadn't been dxed yet, I had to be on O2 for the 3 days that i stayed there because they couldn't get my O2 levels up. Be sure to tell your dr. and the surgeon as well as the hospital or surgical center staff. And do take your CPAP. As others have posted, you might have to have it checked by the hospital engineering dept. to make sure it meets their codes or what ever. Just tell them (dr. or preadmit staff) You really won't have much of a problem during the surgery and the immediate recovery period but it's afterwards when you're not monitored as closely that you'll really need it. There's a good post on surgeries and cpap on this forum. Hang in there! Hopefully you'll be able to get away with a simple laporoscopy proceedure and not have to spend night. They tried that on me and as they were removing my GB it started leaking so they had to open me up. Hope you get feeling better really soon. I know as soon as my surgery and the recovery period, I got to feeling normal again. It too shall pass.

Talk to your doctor about using cpap at the hospital. You will probably want it. I had my tonsils out and a UPPP done and took mine. I didn't even ask, but my doc did call to make sure I brought it. The hosital will have to have someone check it to make sure it is operationally safe meaning it doesn't have any electrical shorts in it.

Also mark it with your name address and phone number and pt number. Mark your mask everything. I had everything marked except me and my wife and nurse said I should do that too since I marked everything else.

I didn't use my cpap in recovery but I had a nurse sitting next to me in recovery. I used it when I got to my room and when ever I wanted to sleep.
