bed pillow

Post by ProfessorSleep » Sun Sep 18, 2005 6:55 pm

Yes, I have one and I love it (the double size or whatever they call the larger one, not the mini). I don't like foam am leery of foam products, so tempurpedic wasn't an option. I couldn't find a regular pillow with a thick enough or firm enough edge. I splurged for the PAPillow and it's been my salvation as a new cpap-er. I jmay even have to figure out how to stuff it in a suitcase for travel Your mileage may vary, of course, but I've been very pleased.

Is the reason for this pillow is that if you should turn to sleep on your side that it wont cause any pressure on the mask or face....?

Primarily, yes. It has a cut-out kind of shape so your forhead and jawline are supported by the nasal area and cheeks with the mask are more or less in the cut-out area and are not moved because they make little, if any, contact with the pillow. I also like it because it is firm and high enough to provide good support and suspension off the bed. I couldn't find a regular bed pillow that provided the same degree of support so I could let the mask hang over the edge.

As I make my living selling foam products, I have to ask, why are you leery of foam?

I have the PaPillow, but I don't use it. It is way too thick for my neck. It must be 4 inches high! I've purchased 3 pillows lately but I keep going back to my old, very flat, 3/4 inch pillow.

No offense, of course, but I've had allergic reactions to a number of foam products, for unknown reason. I don't avoid it totally but I have learned that it is not a good idea for me to bury my head in it.

Oh, no offense. Just interested. You do known that there is natural latex rubber, real rubber, and synthetic. Do you know which bothers you? I could tell you what brands are what.

A Tempur-Pedic pillow is what I use. Good firm edge to keep head up just enough that mask doesn't hit mattress sleeping on my side, yet "cushy" enough to be comfortable. I don't like a hard pillow or high one.

I do not know what happened I was not done posting. any way I also have a pillow that is made out of memory foam when I first got it I threw it across the room several times because I could not use it and felt like I could not breath. I started loosing weight after I had been using my CPAP unit and not only can I use the pillow but I guaranty that if someone wants to take my pillow now they will have to pry it from my cold dead hands!!

Ramblin man, yes the larger size PAPillow is firm and I guess a little high (4.5 inches thick). That works perfectly for me. But I especially like the cutout shape. The smaller one is thinner for people who don't want that much height.

R&R, I would appreciate more info on foam. Can I send you a PM? I see a lot of foam products (like the memory foam) that I might like to try. But chemical sensitivities, particularly to latex and related products, are a problem. Thanks for your offer to explain - I've been looking for someone who could!

R&R and ProfessorSleep
I believe a public discussion of the subject (pillows, foams and allergies) would benefit many.

I bought one of the small papillows. It was still too thick for me. It's only about an inch thinner than the larger one. Since I'm in-between a side and stomach sleeper I need a fairly thin pillow. The thin tempurpedic is what I have used for many years, and it seems to work fine for cpap use.

The subject of pillows has been addressed by me many times the past few months, please do a search.

You allergies are most likely from natural latex foam. Man made foam such as the Tempurpedic are hyperallergenic and it is rare indeed for anyone to be allergic to them.
