Is this rain-out?

Post by tonycog » Wed Nov 18, 2009 7:48 am

Hi
I'm entering my first low-temperature season on Bi-PAP. I experienced rain-out for the first time about 3 weeks ago. I now have a fleece hose-cover and haven't had anything like that since then (IE: hose full of water drops, sprinkles on my face.)

However, for the last 2 or 3 nights, I've wanted a bit more humidity in my air, as I sometimes wake up with a very dry mouth and throat. (I use a full-face mask.)

My humidifier has only been set to 1. When I turn it up to 2, I wake up with condensation in my mask. It is only in the mask, not the hose. I wake up with a little puddle all around the seal. The first time I felt it, I thought "Holy cow! Did I drool THIS much?" It's water, though. When I turn the humidity back to 1, I don't get the problem.

Any advice? Thanks,
Tony

Try 1.5

Also lift the hose so any water in it will drain back towards the humidifier - do this each morning.

Hi

My machine doesn't have fractional settings. I can choose 1 or 2.

I just checked my hose. It's difficult to tell completely since there's a cover on it, but my hose looks completely dry inside. I don't know about 2 AM, though, when I had the little puddle on my mask seal. I did leave it in the air so that anything that might be in there can drain back to into the tank. I just don't think that there is much, if anything, in there.

Thank you,
Tony

I had to use passive humidification because condensation would often occur at any heated setting, even with a fleece cover on the hose. Any moisture in a pillows interface is uncomfortable and causes leaks. I just started using a Sleepzone heated tube, and can now finally use the humidifier. Warms the air nicely and avoids rainout in the tube and mask.

I too have the same mask puddle problem that you have, I too have a hose cover and I have played around with adjusting my hose. My hose is always dry inthe morning but my mask has more than a few droplets. I talked to my RT and was told that I am definitely experiencing rainout. I do have increments on my humidification and if I go under 2.5 I have very bad dry mouth and dry nose (I use a ff face mask) MY RT reminded me I easy I get sinusitis and that I have to use humidfication so it has been suggested I look into a heated hose. My doctor has written me a prescription for the Aussie heated hose and my insurance has said that they will pay for it as an out of network expense.
