Windows 7 Encore Pro/Viewer

Windows 7 is nothing more than an updated version of Vista. It is not a much of a memory hog and runs faster but seems to take the same things to get it to run. Still does not like XP software.

When I had EncoreViewer working solidly on Windows 7 XP Mode, it was with the release candidate. Since it is a working XP operating system the drivers that EncoreViewer installs should work. In fact they did for a few days after I had installed the final version of Windows 7 Professional. I like to have different users setup for normal everyday use on my computer and just use an administrator account for special things. When I started setting up user accounts and installing XP Mode on my everyday user account is when I started having problems with Encoreviewer reading the smartcard. I haven't been able to get it to work since then. I have been very busy lately and have not had the time to spend all day investigating and trying things to get it working. I do think that the problem is related to drivers that either Win7 downloaded or maybe the XP Mode doownloaded during Microsoft update sessions. Removing all of the smart card drivers and re-installing XP Mode and then Encore viewer has not fixed it. You do have to enable vertualization in your bios and have a processor that supports virtualization. Many Intel processors suppport it and most modern AMD processors do also. Intels and AMd's web sites will tell you if your processor supports virtualization.

DJ, I am not running Windows 7 yet!!!! I have a friend that had Vista and has now upgraded to Windows 7 and is has had lots of problems getting anything to run. About 75% of his XP programs he has had to scrap because they won't run (or he can't get them to run) on the 64 bit system. I am trying to set up Windows 7 with XP on a different hard drive but I am beginning to think it is a lost cause. My computer is so old that I don't think the drivers are going to work but I am still looking and working on it.

Jerry: The think with Windows 7 and XP is this: You have to use Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate that will allow the free download of Virtual PC and XP Mode(this is a free version of XP service pack 3) from the virtual pc website. Activate the Virtualization in the BIOS. Open XP Mode and install from there. Now as has been said before, not all processors are capable of virtualization. Windows 7 Home Premium does not do the virtualization and therefore a dual-boot system is necessary with a full version of XP on hand, not an upgrade.

That is what I had in mind but so far I have not been able to get Windows 7 to run on my old machine. May have to buy a new machine with Ultimate on it to get it to work. Right now I am going to stretch my old machine with XP as long as it will run but I may get a Windows 7 machine so I can try and see how bad it is going to be when this one dies.

Jerry, the only machines I trust are ones that atleast came with Vista pre-installed for Windows 7 to be a choice for them. My laptop actually came out in January of this year so I know that it is capable for Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate. A plus for Windows 7 is not only TRIM for SSD's but in one package is both x86 and x64 versions of the software.
To everyone upgrading: Back up your software and files on an external hard-drive, have the original discs and registration keys for your software

Virtual PC still works on "unsupported" Windows versions. I use it at work on an XP machine with no problem. At home on my Vista 64 machine I get an error saying that it's unsupported, but then it runs like a champ.

What about XP Emulation Mode in Win7 though? Did anybody try that with any success?

I use VMware 6.5, with XP Pro installed with Encore Pro 1.8, I need it to run my All in one printer scanner too. It is flawess in Win 7 32 bit. Jim

I can use Win 7 and XP pro at the same time, USB drives only work in which one you have them assigned too.

I have over the weekend did an upgrade(full install) of Windows 7 Professional x64 and XP Mode on my laptop with PDF Converter Professional 6. I opened up XP Mode, installed Encore Viewer 1 and the Mako DT3500 Card Reader and it installed and worked. I installed Encore Pro 1.8 and it is working. I was able to read the card get the report and then get a report for this morning when I reset my machine to zero to start recording and I am happy to say that it works. There was no SQL previously installed when I did the clean install.
I also should say that I did a custom install not the typical install of the Encore Pro and I used what was on the disk and nothing else.
