First day here. :)

Hi Everyone


Today is my first day here. I have been reading this site for a few days. I feel so happy to find such a friendly, helpful bunch of people.

I had my night at the sleep disorder place a week ago. The dr's office said they will tell me in the morning, what I will need. And give me a prescription for it.

Question...Do I get any choices in the machines I receive?

I will be getting a full face mask. That is the most I know so far. I was planning on trying the Resmed Quattro first.
The girl setting me up also mentioned a Soyola or Respironics Total.

Have to admit...I am getting excited. I can't wait to get a good nights sleep. And wake up with the energy I see everyone talking about. Maybe even get back into my own bed. Moved out a while back due to snoring like a freight train.

Yes, you do have a choice of machines. The DME that you work with (durable medical equipment supplier) might not want to give you a choice, and they might not want to let you have an advanced machine that is data-capable (ie, tracks your therapy). They might even lie to you and claim that an entry level model records your data. As a result, it is important to be informed about the machine choices. If they don't want to do the right thing, you can find a different DME, and might even be able to buy on-line.

I know what you mean about being anxious to get started. The time between my diagnosis and getting equipment seemed to drag on forever, and I was going nutty knowing that I needed to be on the machine really badly. I am getting my life back, so the entire process has been worth it.

Welcome to the club. I'm new here too.

My wife and I were occasionally taking turns sleeping on the couch because of my snoring. It was horrible. But now I haven't made the slightest sound since starting CPAP. The snoring is completely gone!

I didn't get a choice. I did my sleep study through the V.A. When I went back to get the results, the V.A. gave the group I was in the same machine showed us how to use it and off we went.

The experts here will have to know little more about your machine, mask, pressure setting. Go into the Control Panel, Profile, Edit Equipment and post the details in text. It will also help if you have a copy of your results? Good luck and keep us posted.

The following is from a post by rooster (I hope he won't mind if I simply cut and paste). Note #6.

Things To Ask About Your Polysomnogram (PSG) and Titration Study

1. Did I have any central apneas? How many?

2. Were there any comorbidities? What were they?

3. Did I breathe or leak through my mouth? How often? What do you recommend to prevent it?

3. Did I exhibit Positional Sleep Apnea (PSA)? Was my apnea more severe in one sleeping position as compared to others? Is my pressure requirement higher in one position as compared to others? (Often sleep apnea is more severe when sleeping on the back.)

4. Is there anything else unusual about the results?

5. How will I know my therapy is preventing apneas?

6. I am determined to own a data-capable machine and software to monitor apneas, hypopneas and mask leak. This will allow me to call your office with specific questions if I have problems with the therapy. Will you help me with the appropriate prescription?

In addition to the questions:

1. Get a copy of your PSG. It is your legal right to have one.

2. Get a copy of your CPAP prescription.

3. Make sure the prescription calls for a humidifier with the machine.

Hi, and welcome. May I suggest one thing before you commit to a mask (others have mentioned it too), and that is to get a good try of a Resmed Ultramirage full face mask - comes in all kinds of interesting sizes - as it's very popular and holds up well, but the "total" is almost never worn by most of us and while it looks like a great idea, it actually seems to end up leaking a lot around the edges (not a good thing), and while I found the Soyala to be 'ok', the UM FF is better for me. There are so many out there, so don't get hustled into any one til you've had a good try at a lot. Good luck!

well the Dr's office just called me back. He is doing surgery and can not look at the paper work till morning.
oh well, I waited this long. whats one more day.

OK, I wish you luck. I lasted exactly 3 hours the first night. And a little longer the next night. I am hoping that you adapt to using the machine right away, but please don't be frustrated if it takes a little time to work the kinks out. And please do post again to tell us how it goes. It is exciting to have a chance to get your life back.
