What do these numbers mean?
I posted a few days ago about having trouble tolerating the setting of 16/10 due to aerophagia so I am working my way up from 10/5 to try to get to the goal number. I am now at 11/6 - so far so good and thanks to someone on this board - I found my efficacy menu and here are my numbers.
Leak .02
VT 250-450
Resp. 16-21
MV 5.4-7.6
AHI 3.7
AI .3
Here's my question -- what do the leak, VT and MV numbers stand for? And what are the goal numbers for all these readings? I feel rested and slept soundly during the night.
Thanks for your help.

Re: What do these numbers mean?
Pel,
Interesting. Those ai and ahi numbers look pretty good, possibly outstanding. I don't know how your machine reports leaks, but at first glance, that looks OK, too. If the leaks are too high, the ai and ahi might not be reported correctly, so that is something that you might want to look up in your machine user manual and compare that with the numbers that are in your mask--each mask has a different leak rate.
If this holds up, you might be good to go at 11/6, and might have been OK at 10/5. The question then is what went on during your sleep study to make them think it was 16/whatever? Are you sleeping in a different position? It is funny how every answer seems to raise yet more questions. At this point, one possible option would be to collect some data over a few nights, then ask your MD to take a 2nd look at it. Also ask what the study was showing--maybe they had some other concerns.

Re: What do these numbers mean?
Jweeks - I previously posted the "could someone interpret my study" a few days ago and you responded that CPAP pressure does not work on a sliding scale and that I could be risking my health and life by not using the 16/10 pressure. I thank you for that answer because it shook me up enough to investigate further.
Now I am wondering what do these abbreviations mean: VT and MV fromt eh efficacy menu. Also what are the goal numbers as far as AHI and AI. You know no one ever explains any of this - the dr tells the DME to set a pressure and little else is explained. Thank goodness for this board.

An AHI of less than 5 is considered to be satisfactory treatment.
Of course AHI is the total of AI (apnea index) plus the HI (hypopnea index). Index being the number of events averaged per hour. If your stated numbers seem to hold true then you are doing very well if it also corresponds to feeling well also. An AHI of 3.7 is well within acceptable numbers and if you feel well with it then that is wonderful. So how do you feel?
Sorry, can't explain VT or MV, one relates to volume I think. Not sure what acceptable numbers would be for these things. Someone else experienced with your type of machine will know.

Re: What do these numbers mean?
Tidal volume (symbol VT or TV) is the lung volume representing the normal volume of air displaced between normal inhalation and exhalation when extra effort is not applied. In a healthy, young human adult, tidal volume is approximately 500 mL per inspiration or 7 mL/kg of body mass.

I'm learning more here than my Dr appts..

Re: What do these numbers mean?
MV - minute ventilation- how much air do you inhale in a minute- normally 6-8l
Calculated by multiplying tidal volume by respiration rate.

The last 3 notes (or at least Trinanderson's) are replying to a 10 yr old posting... start your own threads for heaven's sake.
