Trying to stump the mask leaks...

Post by Cygnusia » Tue Nov 03, 2009 7:51 am

Does anyone have any suggestions for killing mask leaks in a Quattro?

I've tried to make my own cloth barriers, which work well, but raises my leak rate by at least 4-5 points. Last night I put some KY on the mask, but I had an unfortunate bout of rainout (attempted a setting of 3 on the humidifier again) so it pretty much nullified the effects.

It wouldn't be so bad, but when it's getting ready to leak, I can feel the outer seal start to roll and push outwards, which causes a tickle and that's what wakes me up. It really only happens around the sides of the nose.

If you've gone to those extremes and STILL have unacceptable leaks, I'd consider going with a mask that fits you better.

So far, this seems to be the mask that fits me best! I went through a number of other masks (pillow, nasal and full) and I'm generally most pleased with the Quattro. I just need to find a tweak that makes flatlines those annoying little side leaks.

Do you wash it daily? That usually helps for me (the Quat is my backup mask).
I see you haven't listed the hybrid. You might try that. That (Liberty) is my main mask, but I have to safety pin the top strap to get the pillows into the right position. I don't know why they didn't put velcro on that strap.

I did try the Liberty at the sleep center and I hated the way it felt on my face! Especially on area between the upper lip and nose. It's the main reason I didn't take to the Activa.

I do wash my mask on a daily basis, and my face just before I go to bed. I just end up sweating and the mask gasket rolls out from the air pressure...

Another guy posted that he shaves in the evening, then washes his face before bed -- might be worth trying. On the other hand, maybe you need to wait for sufficient recovery so you don't sweat so much.

Not being familiar with your mask, I wonder if you are over tightening it?

I do have to clamp it down pretty good, else I get leaks around the eyes, which of course is even worse...

I don't know if this will help but it might be you have the wrong size. It seems the difference between sizes can sometimes be measured only in 1/8" but it may make all the difference. We were doing the same thing as you and so far the smaller size is much better for my husband. Dori

I did try the small size, but the medium felt more comfortable to me. I believe that I'm stuck somewhere in the limbo between...
