OT: Anybody noticed weight gain with Vit. D supplements??

Post by grumpygirl » Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:44 am

Had my vit. D levels checked a while back and am now taking about 2,000 IU a day. I've noticed recently that I have started to put on extra weight. I haven't changed any other habits and not eating more- anyone else noticed weight gain with Vit. D supplementation?? I know Vit. D is a steroid type hormone-thought maybe that was why I was gaining the extra pounds!! Thanks- GG

I hope not. I am on 50000 once a week and just started weight watchers. I don't need anything slowing me down.

Nope. I was on 100,000 IU of vitamin D weekly for 3 years, 50,000 IU weekly for another 2 years and am now on 50,000 IU every other week this past year. No weight gain - until last fall for which there was another well documented cause.

I have been taking Vitamin D supplements for the last three years because it was very very low and I have not gained any weight. Have not lost any but have not gained any.

Gosh I hope not. I just started the 50,000 weekly two weeks ago. This last week, I gained 5 pounds but I'm going to assume it's because with the cold weather, I've changed what I'm eating. More cold weather comfort foods. Although 5 pounds in one week was a little alarming! But I'll blame it on my cold weather appetite!

For those of you taking the 50,000 units dose of vitamin D, you might want to do some research about the various forms of that vitamin. Doctors prescribe the 50,000 unit dose of D2 because that is the one available by prescription. From what I have read, D2 is slow to convert to the more bio-available D3 which is what the sun gives us and what we really need.

I consulted the compound pharmacist locally who told me that D3, available over the counter, is better than the D2. After I talked to her, I started reading online to find lots of information out there that says the same thing. I then talked to my doctor who had prescribed the D2 and she agreed that instead of her prescription I should take 5,000 units of D3 daily for a couple months.

If you have a compound pharmacy nearby, you can get D3 with no additional ingredients such as filler or preservatives.

I hope it doesn't make us gain weight. Now if it would help us lose a bit ....

No wt gain, in fact I've lost. Been on D3 since 9/25/08. Now, I take 8,000 IU/day. Levels just above normal, aiming for optimal. As predicted, my HDL rose 10 pts...yeah!

I usually gain weight with almost everything but haven't gained an ounce since starting 3000 IU of vitamin D -- 2 years ago. I've lost some weight but that wasn't related to the vitamin D.
