Solutions to stopping hissing noise from nose plugs

Post by fsmitty » Tue Oct 27, 2009 5:38 am

Well, I am still trying to get used to the Mirage Liberty. The large plugs seem to fit me better than the medium ones. However, during the night on of the nostrils will start hissing. I can stop it by putting slight pressure on the nose plug. Someone suggested using some shoe string to put pressure on my nose. Basically, I want to know how other people handle leaks from nasal pillows/nose plugs during the night?

Do you think that using hospital tape might help? Trying to find the best solution.

I never had that problem with my Optilife as the pillows were adjustable enough to get a good fit. However, many people (including me) have trouble with hybrid-type masks (Innomed Hybrid and/or Liberty).

I use a piece of 1/8" elastic loop to press the front of the pillows back and up. It runs just under the "heads" of the pillows and above my ears. It's tied in the back with a slipknot so the tension is adjustable.

Others use the leg from ladies' tights, running it around the neck just under the ears. (Tights differ slightly from pantyhose in that they are softer and cooler, I'm told.) Search on "tights" and you'll find a complete description.

Thanks for the advice. Where did you get the elastic strap from? At the weekend, I did buy a locking bungie cord but it was too small for my big head. Yes, I heard about the ladies tights. Not too sure I have the nerve to go into the womens section to buy them.

Just use a length of an Ace bandage...pin it to your headgear. Gets around having to use knots and/or it slipping out of position

The ladies' tights fix is the best: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14422&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=45

Any fabric store...

Probably even the fabric dept at Walmart. Just plain white elastic like this:

http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp? ... D=prd34907

I tie an overhand knot in one end, and slip the other end thru it before pulling it tight. That way I can pull the loop tighter or looser as required to adjust the tension. Once adjusted, you never even know it's on.

I haven't tried the suggested Ace bandage, but i think it would be both hot and very noticable. And WAY overkill for the slight amount of pressure on the pillows you need.

(I just noticed you said originally that you have a Liberty. Dunno why I was thinking Optilife...)

If you are squeamish about buying pantyhose...wait til you want to try the nipple grease fix!!!

So, you've tried the shoelace and the elastic? Or is it just the "best" of the things you've tried?

I have tried the shoelace trick but found that they came off. Must be due to me being a restless sleeper. Well, on my home from work I remembered that I had saved the pair of Ted's that were used during my hernia surgery. These are like tights that were worn during surgery to stop blood clots. I will give them a wash and use them. That will spare me trying to venture into the womens section looking for tights.

Ah heck, that's half the fun of using them!

Smitty-- You DO realize if a band of some sort doesn't work, we'll be sending you in to buy Lanisoh, right???

That's the lanolin ointment for nursing mothers who suffer from chapping. Known here as "nipple grease"!!! It's great for sealing nasal pillow leaks. Even if putting it on your nose DOES make you feel like a boob! (I'm required by custom to say that...)

Buying tights is nothing compared with a trip to the Lanisoh department...
