difficulty septoplasty recovery

Post by bubsycooks1 » Sun Oct 25, 2009 10:07 am

I had septoplasty, outfracture of turbinate and cryo-something of turbinate on thursday morning. after reading all the archived threads, i figured that it would not be that bad a surgery (which i've avoided for 30 years due to fear). today is sunday, day 3 and I'm still having quite a lot of pain. It is useless to call the dr on this pain b/c on the day of surgery I was not adequately controlled for pain even in the anesthesia recovery room. later that night when i told my dr. that the percocets were not killing the pain, he suggested tylenol. yep, one of those... .
anyhow, I'd just like to know from others when I can expect to begin feeling better. It has not helped that I am utterly sleep deprived. I normally use a nasal mask but cannot use it. I bought a FFM and the "oracle" oral mask for the post op period, but really can't get used to any of it. I'm hyper dry with my remstar c-flex humidifier on the hightest settting. I can hardly breathe and I feel i'm suffocating at times.
sorry for the ramble, i'm just hurting and miserable.
btw, i am bubsycooks, but i can never ever long in to this website...

Hi cooks-

I had turbinate reduction & septoplasty on July 20. For about 2 weeks I couldn't breathe through my nose. That's perfectly normal. I had a great doctor in Seattle. I didn't have the cyro(whatever). Everyday after 2 weeks got better & better. After 4 weeks most of the swelling is gone-90%. Then over the next 2 months it's totally gone. I recall 3 days post-op I had no pain but I was still very uncomfortable. Hang in the because in about 10 days you'll feel a noticeable improvement with more to come. The main issue is the swelling. You'll still have plenty of swelling but it's going to get much better.

You can, I think, just go to the nearest emergency room and ask for analgesia. Explain what happened and that you can't reach your MD (either by phone or by asking!) and they will be able to see that you have had surgery so are unlikely to refuse you help.

thanks for the input. I look sooooooo forward to breathing like the rest of the normal world... been this way for just too many years. 10 more days.... can't wait...
regarding the emergency room visit... my ER copay is $1000.00. I am in pain, but that much of a copay necessitates putting up with pain for now. good idea though...
thanks.
