CPAP problems

Post by tk7 » Wed Oct 07, 2009 4:31 pm

I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea and started using a CPAP in the last week. I've noticed after 1 or 2 hours, I am throwing off the mask in the middle of the night. My stats say I've used it 15 hours for 5 days. I don't think I've woken up with the mask on. I'm using the standard Resmed Espace II CPAP on level 7 with just the nasal mask (not the full mask or the pillows).

I'm not sure if this is because the head piece is tight/uncomfortable, I am not using the humidifier high enough or I am mouth breather and it seems it is harder to breathe through the night? Or maybe I will get use it?

I have small sinuses and enlarged adadanoids, as well as large tonsils and the doctor recommended I get surgery for this- any recommendations there?

I've also tried the device in combination with something like a chin strap mysnoringsolution dot com

Any advice of how to remedy my issue and not through off the mask?

That's a very typical story for the initial period of breaking into cpap therapy. Try another mask. Try loosening the headgear or chinstrap. Try changing your EPR or ramp settings. Try raising or lowering your humidifier settings. There's just so many variables to tweak.

Many people find that this aromatherapy product helps get them over the hurdle during this initial break in period: http://www.pur-sleep.com

You might also want to look into some strap guards and hose covers from http://www.padacheek.com

First of all, register as a user here, and list your equipment in your profile. We can help you a lot better if you do that.

Good luck!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

welcome
removing mask in sleep is common for new users, you should have been warned of it and the easiest cure
simply tape mask to face so the pain will remind you to not remove it
I expect you are using some type of full face mask, you may need a chinstrap to stop jaw "opening wide" in sleep and so breaking the airseal
