Is doing the following okay...?

Post by janetlee » Sat Oct 03, 2009 6:55 pm

I'm sorry to keep posting all these questions, but I need to know!
Last night I had on my full face mask and kept having trouble with it wanting to leak around my mouth by the cheeks. To stop this, (since a lot of times I couldn't get the mask to stop leaking completely no matter how I tugged and pushed and readjusted!), I let a little air fill up my lower lip above the chin. That seemed to seal it. Is that a good solution?
The therapist had thought I should have a small mask, but because of the pressure close to my nostrils, it made it hard for me to breathe through my nose. That is why she had me try the medium size. She said that if the mask is a little biig though, it makes it harder to keep it sealed.
Anyway, I hope I'm not becoming tiresome!

Janet, I'm a newbie as well, but I'd say if you found a way (albeit unique) to minimize leakage, that's great. Would help to update profile with equipment, mask, and if you have capability, to post results for the experts here to give you more specific feedback. But you've got the right attitude, and hang in there.

a chinstrap may help with A FF mask to stop jaw relaxing and 'opening wide' in sleep,
experiment by wearing mask higher up or lower on face

Janetlee - post away! No-one minds at all. That's what the board is for.

I see nothing wrong with your solution if, in fact, it gives you a good seal. Do you think you are able to maintain the puffed-out lips even when you are asleep? Do you have a data capable machine where you can actually check your leak rate during the night?

Millich... Janet doesn't have a data capable machine.

I plan to ask about one on Monday. Somehow, with me being on medicaid, I doubt they'll admit it even if I can have a better one! But I will definitely ask.

That's what my husband does after he puts on his FF mask and turns the machine on. He raises the mask off his face just a bit and then sets it down again which creates a seal. It works (most of the time). Good luck.

Medicaid will cover ANYTHING! We have medicaid. I have a resmed S8 elite, with new parts every 3 months. My son has an insane amount of respiratory equipment, including a travel nebulizer (all for asthma). They paid for a special needs stroller for a 5 year old with no physical disabilities, only aggressive behavior (and he can become a danger to himself and others). He also gets brand name meds due to allergies. Medicaid will cover condoms with a script! All you have to do is get a script written very specifically.

It may depend on what state you live in and their rules. Medicaid is a state-managed program.

The only thing Medicaid won't pay for is the doctor's minimal fee for services rendered, at least in NY and NJ. I worked
as a medical office manager for many years in both states and could never get either state to pay our "legitimate" claims so after mountains of paper work and time consumed, we usually just wrote them off as a loss, so out of necesssity most specialists and even primary care drs have had to opt out of the Medicaid program. What needs to be overhauled besides the fraud and greed in the government, is the sense of entitlement of clients in both Medicare and Medicaid.
