pressure increase vs leaks

Post by johnho » Sat Oct 03, 2009 8:53 am

I've been on cpap for 15 months with a 8.5 pressure HI=6 AI=0.7 using swift nasal mask leaks were under control arround 0.25 .recently my pressure was increased to 12 with HI 11.5 AI 0.5 leaks went up to 0.86.my machine is resmed vintage 2 pressure is on autosetmode since the begin. since the pessure increase i've had EPR between 1 and 3 with leaks still to high.Since the change i dont feel the leaks or can explain them .Are these leaks reponsable for my HI index increase? I cannot say i feel better or more rested since the change.thank you.

I'd say yes, going from 8.5 to 12 would likely increase the leakage. Have you adjusted your mask to compensate?

It's hard to say what's causing what until you reach stability again.

Do you know for a fact (from e.g. sleep partner) that you are not a mouth breather while sleeping? A lot of us end up with that problem once Cpap gets going, possibly the pressure of all the air coming in, which is going to be lost if your mouth is open. Turning up the machine's pressure just makes it worse, so I suggest you experiment for a couple of nights with tape (do a forum search for what kind) over your mouth and if your #'s are better and you feel good, you should investigate getting a full face mask instead of a nasal one.

Just wondering why such an increase in pressure? Did your Dr recommend it and was it increased gradually? I don't know much about your machine but if it's data-capable, do you have the software to monitor your therapy?
