Proper Fitting Resmed Swift LT Nasal Pillows

Post by unclematt » Fri Oct 02, 2009 9:28 pm

I got this today as a new mask. I've never tried nasal pillows. I'm wearing it at the moment but I'm confused as to how the nasal piece is going to stay in place while asleep. I tend to move a lot at night and need a mask that will stay in place. This feels like the ultimate in comfort if I can just get it to work. Does anyone have experience with this? Does the air pressure hold it in place?

the pressure helps some. did they give you all three sizes of the actual pillows to experiment with? I use the medien one and also a dab of the wonderful nursing mom Laniosh cream on my nares. don't tighten the side straps too tight. I also find that routing the house up rather than letting it dangle reduces my leak rate along with the hozer management thing on the wall above my bed.

My DEM only gave me the medium size pillow. I'm a bit upset about that because I just looked on Resmed's site and they make it sound as if all 3 pillows come with it. I just tested it with the machine on and it did seem to stay in place while I was sitting. We'll see tonight how it does while sleeping.

Just make sure that it fits snugly and not to tight or to loose (as both will cause large leaks)! Place the pillows at the entrance of your nose, not inside your nose, they just sit there and rest on your upper lip! I use the Swift 11 and I bought the Hose buddy from cpap.com , I have the heated hose hooked to that to reduce the pressure off my nose. I route my hose on the left side, I sleep on my left side and my back, this has worked out great for me since purchasing the Hose Buddy.

I think you will find that the nasal pillow seal isn't as fragile as a person would first think. I have used the Swift LT as well as some other nasal pillow brands and they all do very well. I toss and turn a lot. I have the hose just hanging loose. I don't wear the mask very tight at all. Sometimes I get nearly straight leak rate lines showing on my reports. Sometimes I have a few little ups and downs but overall the average has been well within acceptable range. Only rarely have I had any large significant leaks. I am mostly a side sleeper but I am pretty much all over the place at sometime or another during the night. The size of the pillow will likely make a difference so don't be discouraged if you find you might need to change the size one way or the other. With the Swift LT I did well with the Small but noticeably better with the Extra Small.

Don't over tighten the gear. Won't make it seal that much better and you will end up with sore nose. Make sure the tension on side straps are equal. My brother in law tried to stop a leak by really strapping up one side and ended up rubbing his nose raw. When I saw how he had it set up I just had to laugh, no wonder his nose was raw. He nearly had the right side up into his eyeball it was so tight..

Oh man, DME short changed you on the pillows??? The mask packages come from ResMed with 3 sizes of pillows. Make them give you the others... Tell them you might want to try the different sizes. Bad DME, I think the going rate for those pillows are $30 to $35 if they were going to make an extra few bucks.

Yes, they do come with (all 3 sized pillows), your DME pulled a quickie on you, I have always ordered my supplies at cpap.com and the Swift 11 comes with a blue case, 3 nasal pillows, the headgear, a CD and an instructional booklet!
Geezzzz, these DME'ssssss! I would call them up and tell them I wanted the rest of the pillows if it we're me (believe me, you paid for them) and then some... errrrr

I'm use the Swift-LT, am a side sleeper, and turn a bit in the night. Took me a while to find a good combo a tension (just enough to hold it in place - the air will do the rest), and where the hose goes (for me, it needs to go down in front, and held there by a home made strap).

Same here. A scrunchie around the hose pinned to my nightgown prevents it being loose as I toss and turn. When I got it, I thought I'd wear it up but I don't get a good seal that way.
