Caffeine makes me sleepy

Post by sleepyintucson » Fri Sep 09, 2005 11:36 am

I wondered if anyone else with sleep apnea noticed this effect?

When I was trying to figure out what was causing my symtoms, one being inability to concentrate, I wondered if I might have ADD or something similar. I saw those commericals where they say "Is your life seem like a remote switching channels" I find it hard to concentrate on anything for very long. Anyway...one of the symptoms of ADD I hear is that caffiene actually has the opposite effect on a person.

So now I wonder if this might instead be a symptom of sleep apnea.

You might try being tested for ADD. My son has a pretty good case of it and he can tolerate LOADS of caffeine. I'm thinking the ADD comes from my side of the family. I've not been diagnosed, but I also can drink caffeine right up until bedtime with no ill effects. And years upon years ago in my hippie-like college days, I could never take speed-type substances to help me study, because while everyone else was buzzing around, I'd be passed out on the couch. Buzzy substances make me very tired.

Now I'm pretty sure I have sleep apnea running in my family as well as the fact that I'm carrying some extra poundage.....but my son doesn't have it. So I don't think those symptoms are related to sleep apnea?

I think ADD is way more common than most people realize and it would be worth it for you to be checked out for it. My 2 cents worth.

thanks. I think i will get started on my cpap for a while and see what happens. This doesn't bother me, I just wondered if it also was evident in others with sleep apnea. Hopefully my ability to concentrate will come back and then no problem. If it doesn't, then I will delve into the problem further.
