EEK!!!! Finding a spider in my cpap!!!

Post by Snuffle-nose » Thu Sep 08, 2005 11:22 pm

Hello People

I woke from a afternoon nap with much of a shock when I felt something furry and tickley in my nasal mask in my nasal mask, I woke up and remove my mask and out came a black spider!!!!!

ewww what experince, soft and furry feel in my mask and out blows a spider, I didn't think a spider would last for long in my mask, with the air been blowen thru it by the cpap machine! I suppose that what happens when I leave my mask lying around on my bedside shelf, drawers or on the bedside with the mask uncovered in the area where the tube opening is open to insects etc a

As for me, I had the suprise of a lifetime finding the spider who t crawled down my cpap tube or decided to make it's nest in my nasal mask!!!! ACK!!!!

Been on CPAP for a while.....I had moderate apenoa

Snuffle,

If you start exhibiting a keen spidey sense, please give Stan Lee a call before you start sprouting web-shooters.
Sincerely,

YIKES!!! Talk about my nightmare....

My solution to this is to use my RemStar (with C-FLEX turned off!! LOL), set to a pressure of 20, to blow out the air hose of my 420E. I figure that this is a great job for the RemStar which otherwise, sits idol.

Snuffle nose, you just equalled the famous cockroach story that was the winner in the worst cpap moment post. Thank heaven it was not a brown recluse spider, whose bite the worst one in North America. Its bite is much worse than a black widow's, unless you are unfortunate enough to have an allergy to the black widows venom.

I have aracnaphobia (probably spelled incorrectly but it means fear of spiders.) I will be double checking the mask and hose from now on. These insects can get in the weirdest places. I found a spider in the water level indictor of my jug kettle and had to fill the kettle to get it to come out. I guess it didn't want to drown. Then a fly somehow wedged itself between the kettle spout and the filter and I discovered it after having drank several cups of tea... gross!! Spiders seems to love places that are damp or wet so beware of spiders lurking in your cpap machine. I would absolutely die if I found one on my nose..CareS

Eeeeeewwww!! I hope I never get surprised like that. I hate bugs (unless I am outside in their territory). To have one on your face
No way! I don't even want to imagine it. I hear the farther east you live, the bigger the bugs. Is that true?

Ever since the cockroach story I have been disconnecting the power to my machine & heated hose and blocking the end of the hose with a clean tissue. Not to say that this would stop a very small insect from getting in via the machine perhaps but should make it difficult for the large ones.

Don't they(??) say that on average we swallow half a dozen spiders during our lifetime.

Spiders

So I have been told by my more educated adult children. I have no idea of who "they" are, sorry! WillSucceed admits to one I think.

PS It's soooooooooo lonely on this site in the mid-evening as you're all fast asleep under your masks. Nice to see you're up early Ozij.

Hi Snuffle-nose,

If I were you I'd be a little disappointed too! But you shouldn't feel especially bad about this, after all, you were fortunate to at least find a candidate, albeit not a good one. Most CPAPers have to go out and spend the big bucks to get one and even then they don't always work out.

Seems to me your little buddy was either:

- too young and inexperienced.
- too old and didn't have the energy.
- just plain stupid.
- handicapped, did you check to see if he had all his legs?
- could have been just rushed and didn't get settled in yet.

You really need to check these things out and take steps to make sure it doesn't happen again. After all, a really good spider is hard to come by and not everyone gets one blown to them on a silicon mask.

A few other points to keep in mind are:

- go easy on the Ky gel. Their little legs get stuck in the goo and inhibits
their mobility.
- make sure you use the correct proportions of vinegar when cleaning your
mask. Spiders are not crazy about vinegar fumes and it distracts them
from their main purpose.
- if you have C-Flex set at 3 you may want to consider dropping it a notch.
The higher setting confuses them and they're not sure which way to go
with all the fluctuating air pressure.

So best advice here, is to have your little fellow checked out at the vet ( try to get a specialist as a good arachniack vet is hard to find). If he appears young and strong he can be trained and well worth the money.

My spider, his name is Arni, is very tough and does a great job. The only two times he even came near my mask was when I had the tapeworm problem and the doctor tried to get him to come back up. Ol Arni probably just wanted a piece of the action - can't really blame him. The other time was entirely my fault. The damn chocolate covered ants got stuck to my teeth and it was desert time for Arni.

So you see even strong well trained spiders need some attention. As you no doubt understand spiders always spin their webs upwind, in this case as close to the humidifier as they can get. This way they can get their prey at the earliest opportunity and the less you have to worry about really undesirable creepy crawlers in your hose, I still think the best part though is the way their webs give the added security of a truly magnificent next generation air filtration level. Really lets me sleep sounder at night knowing I have a live guardian close at mouth.

PS- You weren't thinking of selling him were you? Just looking for a backup.
