Oral Masks

Post by sharonokc » Mon Dec 06, 2004 11:35 am

It is new mask time again, and I have been looking at all the new styles.

Has anyone tried the Oracle Oral Mask by Fisher and Paykel. This seems to be a mouth only mask with no headgear.

It looks as if it would solve 1)mouth breathing, 2)eyeglass wearing and 3)hair sliding.

I have to get a new mask and machine soon, so please let me know.

I tried one that I bought from e-Bay before they shut down such sales. It's a great idea, but I couldn't keep the air from flowing out of my nose while it went in the mouth. I tried a nose clip for swimmers, but that was too uncomfortable to allow sleep. F & P apparently now sell some type of nose clip, but I am unable to comment on how effective it is. Good Luck with your choice, and hang in there. It only gets better. Georgia Hosehead

I have a new Oracle. The design is much better now than the original design. Fisher and Paykel includes several sizes of nose plugs (plugs, not clips) with the new Oracle.

It really is a "love it or hate it" interface. Dries the mouth terribly unless you have the heated humidifier really cranked up - and is still rather drying then. The nose plugs are a must for me or air will snort out suddenly as a nose air leak! Just about guaranteed to wake one up but at least easier to block off than the mouth air leaks traditional mask users have to grapple with.

I use my Oracle occasionally for those "Too congested - need to mouth breathe tonight!" occasions, but I usually just grab my full face mask instead, or end up switching to the FF mask halfway through the night. Too bad we don't have a designated demo Oracle that we could just pass around for the non-squeamish to try until it found a happy home... then stick another one into the lineup. LOL

Mask experiments sure do get expensive, but sometimes its the only way to find what works for us.

thanks for the responses. I am probably going to go with a full face mask instead of the oral only this time. My nasal mirage mask is in fair shape, and I am mouth breathing again so I really need the mouth coverage. I detest chin straps!

It is interesting in their discription the need for nasal plugs is never mentionsed. It still looks interesting thought the sleep tech I discussed it with said no one he knew had liked using it. I am glad some one likes it.
