I was reading a sleep article in my wife's Woman's World (grocery store mag). Suggestion 5 was:
Silence snores with a banana! The main reason about 30 million Americans snore? Sagging muscles in the back of the mouth that vibrate loudly during sleep. The good news: Eating a banana before bed may cure the problem! Turns out, the fruit's phospholipids help prevent the collapse of your airway during sleep--and the effect lasts six hours. "Lubricating the problem tissues with banana offers a cheap and tasty solution for patients who snore;." confirms researcher Tom van der Touw, Ph.D., with the University of New England in New South Wales, Australia.
Seems like the banana cure is here to stay! The article also said:
Playing the harmonica helps, too! Practicing it for 25 minutes a day tightens lax throat tissues and reduces snoring, suggest a study in the British Medical Journal.
Somehow I don't think I'll get rid of my cpap yet. It does seem, tho, that there is more in the news about sleep studies, treatments etc. than before -- but that may be that I am more aware of such news.
It's simple -- bananas and a harmonica

Do you eat the banana or do you deep throat it? I can't see doing either while playing the harmonica!

I also read this in Woman's World -- great magazine for these medical "tidbits". It works for me! I can't use the CPAP because I am an extremely light, active, and anxious sleeper at the best of times let alone with a dead thing clamped to my face. Anyway, I ate half a banana before bed and another half when I got up to go potty about four hours later. No sleep apnea. Ordinarily, I am very aware of the constant breath stoppage and waking up until I have been asleep for about an hour. Then, occasionally, throughout the night. Nothing! This was more amazing since I have a bad cold, very congested and sleeping poorly even for me. Two nights in a row and counting.
The harmonica thing is a no go. I would sing if people didn't tell me to shut up.
