That's why I made sure to get a headset for my HT.

Trust me, I am. As soon as I can order the ARRL guide for the general exam I will be good to go. I want to get it within the next month or two so the data will be fresh in my head. I will probably stay general for a while until I get a good home rig and a decent antenna before I go extra.

Way to go, Kevin. I use an FT-857D as a base unit. It's probably not the best at any one thing, but it's pretty good at almost everything and at less than $1K even with a good power supply, it's a relatively painless way to get in to HF.

As an aside, I'm local to Associated Radio, one of the national equipment advertisers. They're good people and I can recommend them. So far I've got the 857 at home, an FT-8800 in my truck, and a VX-7R, all from AR.

I can't wait to start collecting QSL cards. Speaking of, I need to start designing mine.

I passed the test on Saturday and was issued my call at 4p today.

KJ4ODP

Don't keep tabs on that too much, I already applied for my vanity so I should get that soon, hopefully.

Congratulations on your passing, Kevin!

Interestingly enough, there was a VE session here in Reno this past weekend as well. Two of my friends got licenses as well. I guess this was a good weekend for ham radio.

There is generally a test session every week end of the year unless it's Christmas week end.

"I get a good home rig and a decent antenna "

I'm sure you have been already told that you have that backwards. Get a GOOD antenna and a decent home rig. The wire makes all the difference.

Congrats.

True....the problem is that I currently live in an downstairs apartment of a two story building and I don't plan on being here long enough to sneak wires on the roof.

The best rig on the market won't get a good signal out with a crappy antenna!!!
My $$$ always goes to antennas!!!!
The rigs will follow in due time!!!!! (I've accumulated my stash over 25 years and a stint at the "Candy Store" - HRO)
