Quiet mask
Quiet mask
Just started my treatment yesterday and it wasn't too great. Have trouble sleeping mostly because of the mask/breathing noise. Every time I breath in/out there is a difference in hissing noise that wakes me up.
Any recommendation on what mask I can try to reduce breathing noise? Currently I use "Respironics Profile Lite Nasal" mask.
Should I try nasal pillow type masks? Do they generally make less noise? I tried some kind of nasal pillow mask at DME but at that time nasal mask felt better (but I didn't pay attention to the noise level too much, only focused on how it feels on my face).
I see "Resmed Mirage Swift LT Nasal Pillow" mask advertised as "Ultra-Quiet". Any recommendations if I should try it to see if it helps with noise.

Re: Quiet mask
I can tell you about the Mirage Activa LT Nasal mask (in my equipment list below). It is very quiet. If I hear anything... it's a leak! This is truly one very quiet mask.
Previously, I used the ComfortGel... and I would often get the same kind of noise you describe. It would get worse if I used too high a humidifier setting.
I hope this helps. I am sure others will have mask suggestions.

Re: Quiet mask
I use the Swift LT system. It seems quiet to me. More so than the Optilife nasal mask pillows that were given to me at the titration study but maybe slightly.
The Nasal Aire II prong system might be a little nosier but not by much if any. I am trying it sometimes. With any of them mostly what I hear is when the vent is close to something and I hear air "bouncing" off something.
I was thinking of this post when I hooked up last night and tried to discern if I felt like the mask was noisy or not and I just couldn't tell much difference between being on and hooked up and not.
I will say that any of the nasal pillow systems seemed much quieter than the Hybrid FF mask. At least to me. I haven't used any others to compare it to.

Re: Quiet mask
Like socalmonkey, I really like the Mirage Activa LT. I find it very quiet, even more now that I turned off the EPR setting. It's possible that the different sound when breathing in and out is because EPR is on, if you are using a Resmed machine.

Re: Quiet mask
The Soyala mask by Somnotech that cflame mentioned is the quietest mask I've ever tried. Was virtually silent to me.cflame1 wrote:this one's supposed to be really quiet... I haven't tried it though

Re: Quiet mask
I've used the comfort classic, comfort gel, Swift and Swift LT.
I find the comfort gel to be the quietest out of all of them. I frequently find it so quiet that I have to double check to make sure the CPAP is on.

Re: Quiet mask
Thank you very much for help!
Will call my DME to see if they have any of these masks. I just started my treatment (so far 2 days on CPAP) so I assume I should be able to try out several of them via DME (or maybe just order from cpap.com directly).
I did notice that second night was better, I wasn't bothered by noise too much, but still didn't sleep too well and waked up earlier then I wanted to.

Re: Quiet mask
You've really hit what I think is the most important part - give this some time.
I strongly suggest not giving up on a mask after only a few days. It takes time to adjust to something new - especially something as dramatic as CPAP use.
I didn't sleep well for a couple of weeks. After that, I settled right down though.
The first few nights I couldn't imagine how I'd get to sleep with all the noise. Now I struggle to hear it.
We have to adjust and adapt to our new situation. That only comes with time.
It sounds like you are already well on your way down the right track though. Keep it up!

Re: Quiet mask
The Soyala and Somnoplus are both very quiet - they are made by somnotech. Basically they use the same cushion but exhaust differently. There are other differences too. These are both nasal cushion masks. I get noise from rainout in exhaust vents on the somnoplus often.
The Swift LT is tons quieter than the Optilife in my experience. The Swift LT isn't very noisy but it all depends on where you can blow the exhaust. It is slightly noisier than the Soyala / Somnoplus masks in my experience. Swift LT and Optilife are nasal pillow masks.
The Liberty was a lot quieter than I expected. The Soyala FFM is quiet but tears my nose up and does fart a lot.
As has been pointed out, a big part of this is getting used to the noise, and watching where the mask vents. As much as I like to sleep with head buried under the covers, that isn't always possible.

Re: Quiet mask
Hello, I just started using my cpap last night. At first I had to play with the mask to get the air escape noise to end. I have the ResMed -Escape II/ humidifier and the mask is the Mirage Liberty, it has the nose pillows and covers the mouth. for me it is great. If i hear any air escape then i know its not positioned correctly.. when the noise ends then I calm myself and breathe with my mouth close, and I find that I have no problem with the mask being there and can sleep through the night. it's not heavy or covering my face and thats good. My first night I only had to go to the bathroom 2 times. and was very surprised that I was able to doze back to sleep quickly. plus I didn't wake up with a headache. So so far Im pleased with my machine and mask. Good luck to you and I hope you find the right comfort your seeking too... Nae
