Breaking Acvtia's
Breaking Acvtia's
Does anyone have a problem with their Activa's breaking?
My first was 6 months old and the plastic part where the forehead adjust swivel point is had the side piece break off. It never partially cracked over time, just one more it was completely broken off. I probably made the bad assumption that was just a freak thing, so I bought a new Activa (insurance will only cover 1/year so it was on my own dime). The new Activa has had the exact same piece just break off and its only 2 months old. I treat my masks with great care and I was especially careful with this 2nd mask. I do not frequently adjust the mask and I do not take it apart for cleaning. I just wake up with that same plastic piece broken off. I've contact cpap.com to see what I can do for warranty or defective product replacement, but this is starting to seem like a trend. Anyone else with similar?

mask repair
Not familiar with this maks, but my Breeze(s) have broken a million times.
Mostly due to bending them unnaturally or sitting or stepping on it.
I have repaired mine many times with a soldering gun.
Simply align the parts and melt the plastic.
Sometimes it will be necessary to take another piece of plastic to give additional support- simply weld thru this and melt it all together.
then take the heating element and sculpt it back even.
works for moi-
be careful with a soldering iron - it gets hot.
thought for the day:
What if the hokey pokey really IS what it's all about?

My activa is going strong at about a year old, although the gasket is starting to discolor a wee bit.
Its been a darn good mask for me and very reliable and has even survived a couple of car and airplane trips.

Breaking or cracking something would be a possibility, but the real reason I don't take anything apart (mask, humidifier, etc.) is that I've got this possibly unfounded notion that things taken apart just aren't going to fit back together quite as tightly as they did from the factory. Especially if a person keeps taking something apart again and again.
Gaskets, cushions, fittings, little plastic clips, connectors...if it ain't broke, I don't want to be the one that breaks it! Or causes it to start leaking.

Thanks for the feedback. I am getting it evaluated (which hopefully means replaced) under warranty.
I do not take it apart for cleaning. I do wear the mask so it "just hangs on my face" which I think is fairly loose like everyone else.
This is my 2nd Activa with the same breakage and I have only had this one two months. I was explictly careful with this one - I am in general with all my masks - but I made an extreme point of handling this one with a "tender touch".
Maybe its just been a freak thing for me on these two... I hope!

MaskedMan,
What do you do for hose management? I secure mine midway between the mask and the machine to take much of the torque of the mask. I use a version of rested gal's hair scrunchie method. You will find that this also helps minimize the leaks.

Wading, thanks for the info. I'm going to try the scrunchie method. Right now I route the hose through the posts in my headboard and leave some slack laying on the pillow above my head or just above the pillow. I don't toss and turn a lot, but if the hose falls off the top of the bed and I flip on my side, I do notice it pulls my face or mask. I am going to try the scrunchie at the top of the headboard. I think if I can use the scunchie to keep it from falling lower than me that should help.

Try to call Resmed - they do stand by their products. I had a problem with the Ultra Mirage and they sent me a new one. I use the Activa too - have never had a problem. I even do take it apart to clean it about 2-3 times a week - I take off the cushion and the plastic rim - soak them and put them together once again abour 3 times a week, and the entire mask gets cleaned about once aweek - apart - of course. I have never had a problem. I also use the swivel to quick disconnect when getting up to the bathroom at night instead of entirely de-masking for the trip. Jen
