Blood Pressure & Oxygen Monitoring

Post by schwawi » Thu Jul 16, 2009 12:09 pm

My OSA has unfortunately resulted in hypertension which has not come down meaningfully in response to treatment. While I am making some other lifstyle changes and taking a prescription med, I was wondering if anyone else had same issue and am trying to get a recommendation on a good quality blood pressure monitor so I can keep track myself in between Dr. appointments. Would like to keep below $500.

Also, I am potentially interested in tracking my blood oxygen level while I sleep as I continue to calibrate my CPAP. Does anyone have a recommendation on an Oximeter?

If anyone has experiences in either of the above areas, I'd appreciate hearing about them.

Thanks very much.

The SPO-7500 is a good oximeter with good software and Turner Medical is safe to do business with. Highly recommended.

For BP work, your local drugstore should have a good battery powered test kit....under $100

Also, you need a CPAP machine that's FULLY data capable.....with recording software....so that you can run reports to see how you're doing.

Use your Oximeter software to check the effectiveness of your CPAP machine.....and use your CPAP software to be sure you're breathing correctly.

You're on the right track..........

I have that same blood pressure monitor and like it a lot. Omron also makes a pedometer that uses the same software:

I got both from Amazon a while back, and they were reasonably priced.

I got a really nice blood pressure monitor at Big Lots for $25. They sell the same one at Target for $75.

I have this model:

More info here:http://www.biosexactly.com/Bios%20Exactly/Homepage.html
Some say the cuff model provides more accuracy than the wrist types.

Also the CMS 50F pulse oximeter, ordered from http://www.echostore.com

Both products have good software and been trouble free thus far.

Angiotension receptor blockers do a good job of controlling the hypertension that results from oxygen deprivation like we experience when we have apnea events at night, read the following (originally posted by Rooster):

ResMed S9 range 9.8-17, RespCare Hybrid FFM
Never, never, never, never say never.

For a blood pressure monitor, I recommend the Reli-On HEM-741CREL, an automatic arm-type unit that sells for less than $40 at Sam's Club and WalMart. It's a re-branded Omron HEM-711AC, but costs about $10 less. Consumer Reports gave it excellent marks for accuracy, and identified it as a "best buy". I checked mine against the doctor's wall-mounted mercury sphygmomanometer and it was within a few mmHg of his.

I asked my Doctor for the name of a reliable blood pressure unit. He recommended Omron Products. I've had two, and been satisfied with both. I did take them occasionally to Dr. office to see if they were in the "same ballpark" as my Doctor's blood pressure equipment. They were close enough.

I am finding that cpap requires as many accessories as golf, fishing, hunting. There are all sorts of necessary and not so necessary gadgets ready to be purchased.

I also have the CMS 50 D Plus Pulse Oximeter. It is battery operated, and the instructions need a bit of interpretation. It performs well, and I am pleased with it. I bought it from Southeastern Medical Supply Inc. on line.

Good luck in finding what you want.

Jan

Hi schwawi, this is my first post. I just discovered this forum!

The dabl Educational Trust has good information about blood pressure measurement and home monitoring devices. It is a non-profit Trust that offers a rating on blood pressure home monitors. It lists most home monitors and indicates whether they are accurate or not. It's a great site to visit before you purchase a blood pressure home monitor. Generally the self inflating automatic arm devices are seen as the most reliable. You should only pay around $100 too. I have had an OMRON for many years and it is still accurate. Check out their site at:
http://www.dableducational.org/sphygmomanometers.html

Forgive me if I am breaking your forum rules, but my brother Steve and I have software for tracking blood pressure readings. If you would like software to help you track and chart your readings or if you are not happy with the monitors software, please have a look at ours:

Many thanks! Kellie
