No mask.com

Post by DoriC » Mon Jul 13, 2009 6:52 pm

Just saw this commercial on a network channel advertising this website. Has anyone else seen it? It talks about nightly cpap "torture", "continuous all-night mask tightening", and "unsightly face rashes". I'm going to check out this site. I thought it was outrageous and frightening to those newbies just diagnosed and about to begin therapy. Let's get something going.

I have a No Mask and LOVE it! Takes some tweaking to get it just right and then sleepy tight! With this mask I've gotten down to a .02 AHI. My Quattro could only pull a .06 AHI The No Mask keeps my face all purdy

Well gee, let's see. What happens when you actually go to sleep and your jaw goes slack? Think about it.
DeVilbiss IntelliPap Std Plus with Smartflex; Transcend miniCPAP & Everest2 w/humidifier & batt for travel. UltraMirage FFM; PadACheeks; PaPillow. Using straight CPAP at 13.0/passover humidifier. AHI consistently < 1.5. Began CPAP 9/4/08.

Yep. CPAP-Pro. Many people look at that when first diagnosed. I did.

The general consensus is that people who have tried this either love it or hate it. There is no middle ground.

My question is, "So what happens if your jaw goes slack in the middle of the night?" You lose your mask every time it happens. I suppose that's one way to make sure people address the mouth leakage issue.

You're right about the commercial. JUST what people starting out don't need.

This question used to come about once a month. (Now, a little less often)

Do a forum search on "cpappro"......all one word.

A few users made it work for them......many that disliked it.

CPAP.COM carries it, too. Read the reviews.

It's not the mask itself I'm objecting to, I wish good luck to anyone who can find a mask that works for them. What I'm shocked about is that on national TV cpap therapy is described as nightly "torture",etc.....It's not fair to newbies who are scared to death as it is? What if other medical treatments were advertised that way such as a colonoscopy or root canal?

Valid point. ( It's not the colonoscopy that's the issue! It's the prep for same. We'll leave root canals out of it....)

My suggestion would be to write a letter to the manufacturer and tell him that you object to his commercial. At worst, he'll blow it off. At best, he'll understand that he's losing potential customers with this ad.

Out of all the people I have tried to convince to get a sleep study one listened and LOVES her cpap. The rest would not consider even thinking about an apnea diagnosis because then they might be forced to deal with that horrible cpap they had heard about.

Luckily I knew nothing about it when I was diagnosed so I didn't have that pre conditioning. I slept great at my first sleep study and have ever since. There was no adapting time.

I think this ad is harmful to people who might try this item, not like it and walk away without trying some of the other great masks.

Kira, Good idea. I will write to the mfr. Who knows, I might even contact the TV station, I think it was ABC. So stay tuned for my 15 minutes of fame! Dori

I have that issue now with my father in law. My wife wants me to talk to him because of a conversation she had with her mother. Went like this.

Mother "You father is tired all the time"
My Wife "He should go for a sleep study like Andrew did"
Mother "Your father donesnt have sleep apnea" (i.e. he is not fat)
My Wife "Do you notice him stop breathing at night"
Mother "no, he just holds his breath sometimes but always gasps and starts breathing again in a few seconds"
My Wife "that sounds like apnea"
Mother "your father wont wear one of those jet fighter mask things"

Later with Father "Im not sleeping with a stupid mask on"

End result - refuses to consider sleep study.

I need to talk to him about the health risks / health benefits

Any chance you could get your hands on a pulse oximeter that will record O2 levels throughout the night? His PCP could probably order one through a DME. Of course not everyone with OSA will desat but it might just catch enough O2 level drops and this might get your father in law's attention enough where you can explain different mask options as there are other masks besides the "jet fighter masks". Monitoring oxygen levels is not the ideal solution in lieu of a full sleep study but certainly gives a chance of hinting to a diagnosis and maybe getting the ball rolling for complete study and treatment if needed.

Good idea. I can get one from my wife I think. (shes a dentist) She sent me home with one years ago when she made a "snoring appliance" for me.

Jaw going slack?... CHINSTRAP! I don't have that trouble-- but the way it is designed, most people won't have a problem. The plastic piece is slightly raised and the tongue and the plastic piece "naturally" fit together creating a very good seal ,even with a relaxed jaw after falling asleep. I wish I had seen this mask first!
