How to get odor out of New Mask? HELP!

Post by FatiguedMe » Mon Jul 13, 2009 12:32 pm

Hi,
I just got my Zzzmask Full Face today. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to get the chemical smell out of it? I would appreciate very much any help! Thank you!

It is a very unpleasant smell ! ! !
Take the parts that you will wash everyday and
wash them with baby shampoo. I use diluted baby
shampoo to wash my nasal pillows (or mask)
Dilute baby shampoo with clean cooled boiled water.
Air dry the parts or wipe with lint free cloth.
After a few rinses the chemical smell be go away.
GoodLuck !

I wash every mask, before I use it, in Ivory Classic Dishwashing Liquid and warm water for about 10 minutes and rinse before I wear them. The ones that have that really terrible odour, I put in that same solution and leave them to soak for 30 minutes then rinse before I wear them at all. For every day washing of the mask parts that touch my face, I use the same solution but usually just take a couple of minutes to wash and rinse them.

24 hour soak in either vinegar solution or in baking soda solution followed by an airing for a week - if that didn't do it, then repeat as often as needed

I don't know how bad your new mask is but -

most masks take a month for me to be able to wear them - some don't even need this first 24 hour soak

the Optilife took 3 months before I could even consider wearing it and it was still bad imo.

The swift LT I got a few weeks ago I could use fast - the Liberty I got last fall took 2 soaks

when I was on O2 3 months airing after 2 soaks was what I used.

I soak the headgear too but not always as long.

I also do these soaks with hoses.

Gosh, Jules (and others), what a horrible situation! I have terrible allergies and scents often set them off; however, I have had no problems with any of my OptiLifes or my Escape.

I'd try the vinegar-water soak first.

If my pillows aren't perfectly clear after washing, I soak them (20+ mins) in 1/4 tsp or so of bromelian powder (pineapple extract, buy at health food store, breaks down proteins, which is what allergy exudate is) and the rinse well. I forgot them one time and they soaked all day; I was afraid of what might have happened to the silicon, but it was fine. Just a thought.

Just speculating is all --

I bought the optilife shortly after they came out - so probably freshly made and that is why it took so long. Other masks have been sitting at cpap.com or the manufacturer for a while I suspect before I got them.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I have washed it 2 times so far and am doing a 30 min vinegar soak right now. I am hoping to be able to use it tonight. I decided to give this mask a try mainly because it was on sale. I sure hope it works out for me.

I've tried the vinegar soak, even washing the mask again after, and the smell of vinegar kept me awake, though it is better than the nasty smell of some new masks. My F&P 406 smelled awful for days when I first started CPAP. Now I use Control III, as it doesn't smell quite so pungent as vinegar (to me, anyway). I do hope you can wear your new mask tonight. Tonight I'm trying out my new F&P 432 instead of taping my mouth.

Am I the only one that doesn't mind the 'new car smell' of CPAP machines and masks?

Yeah, I've been reading this thread thinking "What odor?"

Must be that new mask/machine smell that I actually enjoyed for a while.

My ResMed Swift LT mask's instructions specifically state to let dry out of direct sunlight.
