Mask sizing guide at cpap.com?

Post by cajun » Sun Jul 12, 2009 9:18 am

I just used the mask sizing guide at cpap.com. I was considering either trying the Activa LT or getting a spare Comfortgel Nasal. My leak rates seem to be decent (low 30's), but I still wanted to make sure I had the right size. I was given a size "small" by my DME. After putting in my info the site reported that neither the Comfortgel or Activa LT would work for me. Is this tool pretty accurate?

I also found it odd that the Activa LT would not work, but the Activa would according to the site. Another thing - it said I would need a "large" for the Activa, which seems odd since I was given a "small" comfortgel. I know that sizes can vary between masks, but small to large seems like a huge difference. Any thoughts?

I've tried that sizing guide, too, and never been able to get it to produce accurate/correct sizes for masks for me.

I have found the sizing guide to be basically worthless for me. I'm now on my forth mask and the only reliable way to know if it works is to try it.
I would recommend the masks that come with multiple sized cushions so you can try them all. Sometimes the size that seems logical or that is indicated by the sizing guide will be the wrong one but a different size will be the right one.

I tried it and it matched what the technician measured for the Resmed Quattro and the Activa that was picked for my sleep study. ResMed has a template you can print & cut out as well.

I was sized for an Activa Standard Medium and changed to an Activa LT large which works OK.
Next I was sized for a medium Comfortgel Nasal which is more comfortable for me.
In my quest for the best nasal mask I tried the Fisher & Paykel 407 (one size fits most) which is the ideal mask for me. It's the most comfortable and has the least amount of leaks.

I prefer to use the sizing templates from the manufacturer but as others have mentioned, trial and error for each individual is the most accurate test of fit.

If I ever lose weight and my face dimensions shrink a bit, the 407 should continue to work well.

I've used the Cpap.Com's sizing guide, and it came back with some really bizarre info. It said the F&P 432 FFM was not the mask for me, and based on my measurements it recommended an XS Quattro, a Medium Soyala, a Small Standard Ultra Mirage and the F&P 431. I also used the manufacturers' templates. The XS Quattro looked like it would fit well. Unfortunately I could not get a good seal with the Quattro, no matter how loose, how tight or in between I adjusted it. Using the Soyala FFM template, even the Small looked too big, so I passed on that one. After the poor result with the Quattro, I figured I'd try something other than a ResMed mask. Then I saw a F&P 432 on cpapauction and snapped it up. It arrived today and so far, it appears that it will be a good fit. I'll try it tonight and find out for sure. The sizing guide also said the F&P 406 nasal mask would fit (and it does!), but the F&P template says it's too small!

So I agree that the true test is to try masks on and wear them overnight.

So...is there a way to try masks without having to buy each one? Sorry for the noob question.

I've been watching cpapauction. Often I can get a new or lightly used mask for less than the return insurance would cost me if I were to buy the same mask from cpap.com or other online DMEs. This is still buying the mask, of course, but much cheaper. I just got a new F&P 432 off cpapauction for $37 including shipping.

Also sometimes forum members have masks they tried on or used for a night or two and then stuck in a drawer -- and will send them to other forum members for the cost of postage. If you're interested in a particular mask, post a message. At least you'll get comments, and at most you might get a mask to try!
