OT I had a triple bypass yesterday.(complete)

Post by carbonman » Sun Jul 12, 2009 8:48 am

I went for a little bike ride yesterday.
The grand adventure of the TripleByPass.
121 miles 9:40' 10K' vertical
Three passes
Squaw (11,140 ft.)
Loveland (11,990 ft.)
Vail (10,560 ft.)

It is hard to explain the motivation to train for and actually do this ride.
But, Doug, me and 3,498 of our closest friends find that motivation.
It is like a microcosm of a life time, in a 12 hour period of time.
You experience all things that life brings you and have to deal with each one,
if you expect to finish.

One thing that an organized ride like this provides you is aid stations,
so you don't have to carry all your food and water for the entire ride.
This is the organized, chaos of Aid 1, at the summit of Squaw Pass.
Image
This is what you're interested in.....food...
Image
Image
and most important....
Image
The fun is being on the road.
Rolling out of Idaho Spgs., headed for that snow in the distance.
Image
Aid 3 at Loveland Basin
Image
Looking up at the upper switch backs of Loveland Pass from Aid 3, remember this view.
Image
The start of the climb up Loveland Pass from Aid 3.
Image
Looking from the upper switch backs, back down at Aid 3 and the lower pass.
Image
Halfway, Loveland summit in view.
Image
The second of 3 prizes.
Image
Waiting out the rain in Copper Mt., before the final climb up Vail Pass.
Image
The final prize. Summit of Vail Pass. It is a most incredible experience to be here.
There aren't too many parts of your body that aren't screaming at you to stop.
At this point, there are still 28 miles to go....but, it's all down hill.
Image
The rain held off till we completed the 10 mile descent of Vail Pass,
which is some of the sweetest desert there is in cycling.
It dumped on us the last 18 miles into Avon.
We finished in a down pour, soaked to the bone,
glad to be at the finish, sad to see it end.

Can't wait for next year.

Wowowow carbonman! Fantastic...congrats on an enviable accomplishment; maybe some of the newbies will be inspired that recovery of your life IS possible using xPAP!

Thanks for posting the pics, I'd never see anything like this if you didn't

I had to click on this!! I thought, "Oh no, not carbonman, can't be."

I'm glad I didn't see what I at first thought.

And Colorado is a beautiful state. I used to visit Gunnison when my daughter lived there.
The skiing is great at Crested Butte, about 40 miles away.

Now, at my age, I probably won't be doing that again.

However, not to lose heart.

We are getting a new ski slope within 45 minutes of my house!
And we can ski in the summer. Also we can go to church while we are there.

Well, admittedly, its not Colorado. But it will have to do.

I'll bet even yawl don't have one of these.

Congrats!!

I remember thinking this when I used to ride, "There aren't too many parts of your body that aren't screaming at you to stop." You did it - you pushed past and did it!

Carbonman, it's all I can do to make it over those passes in my car. It's an impossible climb, not to mention the fact that oxygen at those altitudes is so limited. I love getting out to the mountains but I could never get my body to do that. I appreciate you posting the pictures and writing about your rides. It's reassuring to know that cpap doesn't have to limit your life, and our mountains are so beautiful that everybody should get to experience them. Thanks- keep posting.

Muse, RECOVERY is the key word.
It is the recovery, every night, that has transformed my life and my cycling life.
I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. If you've never seen it before, it's hard to explain.

Tmars, it really is quit the contrary. Cpap has/is removing all the limits in my life.
Yesterday was the strongest ride of my life.....physically and mentally.....
1yr after starting cpap.
I have no idea what my limits are now.

Once upon a time back in '79 I went camping with my bike. To recover from my divorce.

It was incredibly empowering to move under my own power, my own speed with everything I need to live on my bike. The ultimate in freedom (and sunburn) for 2 weeks.

Can't do that anymore because no amount of cpap treatment is going to keep that tendon attached to my knee. However I am biking again - lightly for short distances.

Congratulations and thanks for the pics.

You're welcome! You do what you can, with what you have and enjoy every moment.

Bet you didn't know where to start with cpap, either.

Get a bike.
Start riding.

Just do it.

Just magnificent!

No way I could ever do something like that, between the knees, hips, and back, but I can mentally ride with you! Thanks for the magnificent pictures...

Carbonman, what a beautiful journey to share with us! While I am still battling other issues right now, I am going to get a recumbent exercise bike, with arm handles for extra therapy, and of course continue with my diet plan. Every little bit I can manage, is better than all the years that I sat and did nothing. A big congrats to youfor completing your challenge!

As usual, great pictures of a beautiful area!!!!!
