My machine tried to drown me!

Post by LupieLady » Mon Jul 06, 2009 7:58 pm

Ok, I am being slightly dramatic in the subject line... but last night I had this strange sensation that I was drowning which woke me up. My machine was literally spraying water into my nose every time I took a breath in. I haven't pulled it apart yet to figure out why it was doing that... but has anyone else had that happen? It was very odd to wake up to, and I don't mean it was just a little moisture.... I yanked it off my face and when I turned the tube upside down water poured into my bed like I had just knocked a cup of water over.

So far my relationship with my CPAP machine is NOT going well...

You're experiencing "rainout." Do a search here and you'll find lots of options and fixes for it.

You can try a hosecover. You can try turning down your humidifier. You can try running your hose under the bed covers with you. You can try adjusting the temperature in your bedroom.

I tried all of these and they didn't work for me. I ended up buying the Aussie heated hose (http://www.sleepzone.com.au/) and that stopped my rainout problem.

With xPAP therapy, do or do not; there is no try.

Hi Lupie,

Welcome to the world of CPAP. This group makes it a lot more tolerable.
I get rainout once in a while. Turn your humidifier as low as you can.
There is a balance somewhere between a dry nose and drowning.

Hang in there. It will get better.

THANKS! I was worried about putting it on tonight... I think I'm going to go mess with it now. I end up going to bed a lot earlier these days b/c I have to wear it awake for 20-30 minutes before I can fall asleep with it. Hopefully falling asleep with it on will get easier in time, too.

Okay... I didn't go to bed yet. This video doesn't give any information you guys weren't so kind enough to already share, but just in case anyone else has rainout issues and wants to watch a nice little video about it:
