YOU AND ME BOTH..........I was overweight 60 pounds to begin with and the last year I gained another 20 so I have to lose 80 pounds. If I could only put the determination I have in conquering and living with this "Hosehead" paraphernalia, then I would be in business and 80 pounds thinner.

Weight Loss

Don't know if Cpap therapy will cause weight loss, but it will improve your sleeping and overall quality of life. Once you are no longer tired, you will probably be able to work on the weight loss program. And, if you do loose the extra pounds, you very likely will be able to decrease the pressure on your cpap machine. As you all know, Sleep Apnea is not really curable, but is 100% effectively treatable.

uncontrolled sleep apnea

Post by bedhead » Fri Sep 17, 2004 11:49 am

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea last March. I have been using a CPAP machine since April. During the summer I had some other health issues which I thought might also be causing my extreme fatigue. However, those have been cleared up and now I am on medical leave from my job which I love. I am currently on a machine which measures how much air pressure I actually need at the moment to keep my airways open. My mask is not latex and is quite new and not a problem as is fairly light and I am used to it. However, I am still experiencing excessive sleepiness during the daytime and have trouble
sleeping for over 4 1/2 hours a night. I have found that activities that help me get in more oxygen during the day also help me feel better. So I usually end up feeling more awake be evening which can be a problem at bedtime. I also have a doctor who I like and who is supposed to be one of the best in a major metropolitan area.
I'm desparate to get back to work. I love my job and being out is decimating my income. Does anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences with positive outcome that you would be willing to share?

Weight Loss/Gain

Post by Apnatic » Sat Sep 18, 2004 8:59 pm

Oh, if the CPAP cold cause weight loss, I too would wear it 24/7 even with my Full Face mask, I could carry around a chalk board to converse with others. LOL

Unfortunatly, seriously, I have not lost weight, it is difficult...Thought I have tried very had and often...I am hoping to have some success, I was retested and my CM went from a 10 to 17 and from nose mask (I was snoring and mouth breathing) to a full face with a Remstar C-flex, I am hoping my metabalism will raise and my body will drop some of these Lbs.

Good luck with your new stuff...hang in there you will get used to it.

Apnatic.

As far as losing weight after going on CPAP, the previous posts are correct. Gettting the proper amount of Oxygen at night as well as achieving REMS sleep does help boost the metabolism. At night, the bodies systems go into a sort of recovery mode, and get the rest they need from the days activity. If they don't get these things, they slow down or at the very least, do not work as efficiently.

Happy to report

I started diet (JC) same week when started using cpap (8 weeks ago) and I am down 15lbs Would love to get rid of 20 more. Both my PCP and Sleep Center MD have told me that loosing weight can help with apnea.
For those who do not want structured diet plan, JC or WWatchers, its important to eat 5-6 times a day or every 2.5-3.5 hours. This "signals" our body that food is "constantly" coming so its ok to use storred reserves.
Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe!

I joined Weight Watchers two weeks ago and the first week I lost 4 pounds and last week I lost 2.8 so its a start and I think that since I have been on the pap machine its helping. I guess "breathing" seems to help the metabolism. I hope to get a total of 80 pounds off but would benefit with 40 to get my knee replacements in Feb or March. Of course the benefit of losing weight for the SA is very important like Lana says.

Weight Loss

Post by SleepyGuy » Mon Nov 01, 2004 3:41 pm

I just had my titration test and don't have my CPAP yet. The technician that conducted the test uses a CPAP machine and told me she has lost 100 lbs since getting it.

I am about 60 lbs overweight and have tried everything to lose weight with absolutely no effect. I have carefully tracked everything I ate and even on diets of 1500 calories per day have not lost an ounce.

My doctor who researches sleep apnea at a major university has told me that human growth hormone (HGH) which is important for weight loss is only released in the deeper levels of sleep. I recently had a test that showed I was not producing nearly enough HGH. During my sleep study, I was spending only 2% of my night at levels 4 and 5.

From what I've heard from these different sources, I'd say that the CPAP SOMETIMES helps people lose weight. I'm hoping I'm one of them.

And of course, having more energy couldn't hurt.

As I said above, I'm a newbie at this, so keep that in mind when reading what I said.
