Company bringing CPAP to my home and setting it up

Post by unclematt » Wed Jun 24, 2009 5:11 pm

I'm a newbie to OSA. I had my first visit today with my doctor after my initial sleep study. Much to my surprise, my doctor was on the ball and had already contacted a company yesterday to have them bring a CPAP to my house. He said they will set it up and make adjustments. It's also supposed to send my information to my doctor if I understood him. From there adjustments can be made. I should have it within a few days. I am really excited! I've never been excited to receive medical treatment before. This is a godsend to find out why I am so tired and miserable constantly. Even better is that the treatment simply involves air. No drugs with hundreds of nasty side effects. The company that's supplying my machine will even bring it to me after business hours. They are an oxygen tank distributor that works around the clock. If someone needs their oxygen at 3:00 in the morning, they bring it to them. I feel a little better just thinking that relief may come soon.

I'm jealous. Read my post about "how long does it take from sleep study to get cpap" and you'll understand why I'm jealous. My doctor called a home health agency to get my machine to my house and set up too, but my insurance company is being a big PILL about the whole thing. I can't believe that this process is going on 2 1/2 months for me. Everyone I talk to has their machine within 2 weeks of their study.

Hello & Welcome, unclematt! Glad you found this forum—SO much useful info and everyone here is so willing to help! My DME came to my home for my first CPAP setup as well. Just be sure they provide you with a data capable machine. It does take time to get everything tweaked and working at its best, so patience is key as one begins CPAP.

IWelcome to the froum, I also got really lucky with my DME, 2 hours after being released from the hospital, it was at my door step, they showed my how to use it, what numbers to look for, what some of them meant. Recently my doctor lowered my pressure and my DME was here that very same day!!! She calls me once a month, and every time I have called her with a question or problem, she calls me back right away.
good luck with you're treatment!!!

Matt, that's great! I can sure understand why you're looking forward to getting started on treatment!

I echo what Rip said --

To see the names of machines that do provide useful data and the names of those that don't:

My list of machines that record "full data" (AHI and leak info) and those that don't -- as of October 2008:

DME might not understand what "Full data" is.

If you want to be proactive about your own treatment, then no matter how excited you are about getting started, I'd call the DME right away and ask them to tell you the FULL name (brand and model name or number) of the machine they are sending.

If it's not one of the machines that can provide AHI and leak data, I'd politely insist that the DME get one for you that can record that kind of information...not just "hours of use." I would not accept a machine unless it can provide leak and AHI data, no matter how anxious I were to get started.

You have a big bargaining chip working in your favor right now. You haven't signed on the dotted line to accept a machine from them yet. They want your business.
