skin problems from CPAP masks

Post by harry33 » Mon Jun 08, 2009 2:58 pm

in 14 years of CPAP use Ive never had any skin abrasions, red marks, or problems at all from my masks, Ive heard the same from a few others but skin problems from masks and headgear are very common

of course all new masks and headgear and airhoses do need to be soaked and then gently washed in warm soapy water to get rid of left over chemicals such as release agent and starch, size, etc in the headgear, remember to suck the water into hose and leave to soak. the possibility of allergies from the silicone rubber are sometimes mentioned

hot water will soften internal clamps holding some masks together

Its been noted that women have fewer CPAP problems than men , perhaps women look after their skin better with skin lotion etc
there are some warnings against face creams or treatments effecting the silicone rubber of the masks but I think these are overdone and that those with cronic skin problems should use them, also I wonder if some vitamins can improve the skin

for what its worth my skin is delicate and effected badly by windburn....
australian, anxiety and insomnia, a CPAP user since 1995, self diagnosed after years of fatigue, 2 cheap CPAPs and respironics comfortgell nose only mask. not one of my many doctors ever asked me if I snored

Welcome Harry,

After 14 years of CPAP, you certainly have the experience to know what will happen - in this case to your skin.

You and many other Australians have joined this forum, it makes us an international bunch. You may not have any unanswered questions, but if you do - someone on the forum will have sufficient expertise to help you.

Jan .
