My wife appreciates that I am no longer snoring, however the howling of the machine irritates her - and if it irritates her, believe me, it irritates me!
It usually gets loud over a setting of 10. Since Iim heading upwards on titration I imagine it could be getting worse in the near future. I am not sure, but I would guess that the c-flex (set at 3 most nights) is responsible for the ebbing and flowing or changing levels of noise. All in all, it sounds like a hair drier right next to my head. My leak level is about 30.
How have others dealt with the noise of the machine?

I use the whisper cap and find it helps. I also use a white noise generator between the machine and me. You might get one from your wife. I drowns out the change in pitch.

Re: Noise w/ Respironics M Series
I turned the C-Flex completely off. Not only do I like it better (I can breathe at my own pace instead of the machine breathing me) but it is now totally silent.

I have the whisper cap and find it helps. I also use a white noise machine (turn it on, set for an hour, just as I get into bed).
I also have a computer mouse pad under the machine so that also helps muffle the noise. Some people put a folded towel under it but be careful not to block any vents.
As you know, my 90% is 12 cm but I have my A-Flex setting at 1. I really can't remember if higher Flex settings caused more noise or not. It's been a while since I used anything but a setting of 1 and that's A-Flex.
Is your machine slightly below the top of the mattress? Mine is on a little table about 6" to 8" below the top of the mattress. That seems to help some too although neither my husband nor I really notice the machine. It has been a long time though so we may be just used to it!

Yes, lowering the flex or turning it off if possible does make it quieter.
