OT : New Stadium for 2010 Soccer World Cup

Post by Marietjie » Fri May 29, 2009 9:50 pm

Image
Building is completed to the New Stadium, Port Elizabeth for the 2010 Soccer World Cup games.
Saturday the 7th of June is Open Day - we can all go and inspect and test the new stadium and its facilities.
It is a 38 000 seater (48 000) during the World Cup.

Just DON'T ask me what I think of the design of this stadium You can't miss it ! It's enormously huge - white - round - garlic shaped - (don't tell anyone what I'm going to say now - I don't like it !
Good thing that it's situated in an Industrial area - so I won't 'see' IT often.
Okay, some will love it (modern design) ! ! !

Yes, it does resemble garlic! Hope they have plans for it after the event.

Assuming the new avatar is family - good looking group!

Kathy

Hi Kathy -

- The South African young people LOVE sport (older ones support them (NOT ME) and they will definitely have plans for future events. After the Open day (2 days - next weekend) it is British and Irish rugby matches. In the newspaper I read that they expect 30 000 visitors at the Open Day. I don't like crowds - so I'm not going!

- Yes, it is our only child, Madré, husband Ian and two boys, Jeandré and Kyle. Thanx for the 'good looking' compliment. They stay in Centurion - not too far from Soweto - 14hours drive from where we live. We are lucky if we see them once a year! (Just the other day I heard what the word 'Soweto' means. I thought it was an african name but this is how it is made up:
So = south
we = west
to - townships. !!! .....Kathy, all the best and have a lovely, lazy Sunday afternoon. Bye for now! Marietjie

Yes, Durban is hot and humid - I visited many years ago. Although summertime in America's Heartland can be every bit as uncomfortable!
My niece married a South African and they settled in Westville. When I visited SA, we spent a weekend in Port Elizabeth and had lots of fun at the beach.

lktnky - thanx for your answers to all my questions ! - Last time we visited Durban was in April 1972 - many. many moons ago! Those years we used to stay in Johannesburg - 6hours drive to Durbs. Gee whiz - you came a long way to visit your niece. All that time in a plane Tell your niece I say 'Hi' ! and if you decide to visit them again, we've got a newly build cottage in the yard - there is room for 3people! You're welcome. Just heard over the news that there is a plane missing with over 200 people - oh, it is so sad! From Rio to Paris, France.I feel so sorry for the ones left behind. I wish you a good night for tonight! Pleasant dreams! - Marietjie

I've always thought that Durban is a bit like an armpit - hot and sweaty. It's about an hour's drive from here, but luckily we're at 1100m above sealevel, so we don't get the heat (we get the mist, as the humid air climbs the hill and cools down).

HA! Don't believe I'll be telling my nephew-in-law that.....we've tried for many years to convince him to relocate here without any success. It IS a beautiful country.

I spent a month with them and as Marietjie says, a LONG plane trip. I think it took 3 days for the swelling in my ankles to go down. Doubt I'll make that trek again, but thanks for the offer to stay!

We visited the Drackensburg Mts.-there's nothing like them in all the world, eh? I LOVED the exchange rate and brought back a carved ostrich egg, some wonderful jewelry and a fabulous giraffe done in Ngwenya glass, among other treasured mementos.

lktnky ! - Ja, for us to see the Drakensberg Mts and Golden Gate are still in our dreams! Can you believe it that we haven't been there yet ? Unfortunately we don't (can't) travel that far anymore because of my husband's (André) 'illness' - for 14 yrs he has Rhumatoid Arthritis and lately he gets VERY tired. So travelling is OUT. André is still very active, does all the maintenances to the house and cars - he takes it slowly and lie down once or twice during the day. It is a pity that he must take all those meds - it's going to kill him!
Ja, those ostrich eggs are beautiful - we decoupage and pratley glow the eggs, not expensive to make and makes a lovely gift. I'm glad you've bought one. There are lots of arty things you can make with the egg, mosaic, etc.
It was nice talking to you - have a nice day!
