IntelliPAP AutoAdjust Travel CPAP Machine DV54D Thoughts

Post by bonjour » Thu May 28, 2009 1:19 pm

I purchased the following equipment form cpap.com and it arrived on Friday 22 May, 2009, and have used it for the past 6 days and here are my early observations.
  • 1 IntelliPAP AutoAdjust Travel CPAP Machine DV54D
  • 1 IntelliPAP Integrated Heated Humidifier DV5HH
  • 1 SmartLink Software with Module, Cable, Data Card and Card Reader for DeVilbiss IntelliPAP Machines DV5FP-cpap
  • 1 Mirage Activa Nasal CPAP Mask with Headgear - Large 60101
I ordered it at 4pm EDT and it shipped that night, I mean it was on a truck that night!! I have placed orders with other (non DME) suppliers and yea they shipped it the same night too, into their outbox awaiting pickup the following day. Impressive right there. well done cpap.com. Package was well packed and arrived exactly when predicted.

The IntelliPAP AutoAdjust Travel CPAP Machine runs quiet, real quiet. My wife doesn't believe it's running even when it is pushing out full rated pressure (20 cm) (my Rx is 19 cm). did I say quiet. Setup was simple to change. They set it initially to 10-20cm so I ran my first night at that setting figuring the "auto" program would ramp me right to 20 cm if I needed it. I have been on a straight F&P CPAP, non-data model, initially at 16 then raised to 19 for the past 3 years so this is my second machine. At these initial settings I pulled an AHI of under 5 with a 90% at 13 cm. I did not expect to see those good numbers at those low (for me) pressures. I then pulled down the worst cold I have had in 10 years which had a major impact on my numbers, but that discussion will be for another time.

The IntelliPAP Integrated Heated Humidifier DV5HH seemed small to me so i figured it would not retain water through the night, but to my surprise it easily did. It is easy to fill BUT, I was doing it after only a glance and it was not obvious where the fill opening is so I was opening the "clamshell" filling it and closing it, that worked but did not seen right. I would suggest a simple sticker (arrow) that says fill here till overflow would eliminate any issues with that. It assembled with no problem onto the APAP machine.

The SmartLink Software with Module, Cable, Data Card and Card Reader for DeVilbiss IntelliPAP Machines DV5FP-cpap. This was the main feature I wanted in my new machine. I wanted to be able to detect events that were impacting my sleep. Obviously these results are not as detailed as those generated by a sleep center study, no brainwave, RLS, observation etc. But a great way to see what is happening during your sleep. This type of capability should be a mandatory part of any xPAP machine as it would reduce (not eliminate) the need for repeat sleep studies as most xPAP therapies could be modified off of this data. I could not find any documentation on what the A, S, H, E, L, M etc. stood for. The one that really confused me was the NRI, Non-responsive Index as "M", not sure where that comes from. I would suggest adding a line under the graph with a key. Since I just went through it I'll point out that hacking/coughing shows up as Snoring (S). The Auto-Off feature, remove the headgear and the machine will detect a mask off and shutdown in 20 seconds. Could the data from the time of the mask-off (leak rate spikes to max and is constant) be eliminated from the data report. I believe I have a couple of AI that recorded while I was utilizing the Auto-off feature.

The Mirage Activa Nasal CPAP Mask with Headgear - Large 60101 is an great mask as it seats to the face by pressure and you use really light strap pressure. This is both it's advantage and disadvantage. The disadvantage is that with the light strap pressure the headgear tends to shift during the night and require some readjusting. BUT using higher pressures it is nice to not have to crank the headgear on so tight it leave welts and still doesn't seal. I would like to see this technology in a FFM as well.

Overall I'd rate at 95%, still room for improvement, but easily a 5 of 5 for me

Fred

I
emailed Kristin Mastin at Devilbiss and she sent me this about the abbreviations used in the reporting:
Here is what each of those letters stands for:

A = Apnea

S = Snore

H = Hypopnea

E = Exhale Puff (exhaling through the mouth)

L = Leak

M = Mixed (non-responding events – these are events our AA algorithm records, but intentionally does not respond to)

We are addressing this in the next version of the software.

She has responded quickly and nicely to a couple of requests I've made for information. I just purchased an Intellipap Auto and have used it one night now - so far, so good.
By the way, I agree with you about the Devilbiss, so far I think mine has served me quite well.

Thank you for the suggestion regarding an instructional sticker on the humidifier chamber. We will indeed explore this option.
