Mouth leakage

Post by hickey19044 » Mon May 25, 2009 10:48 am

Just wondering, I've recently been upgraded to a 20cfm pressure (been using CPAP therapy for years) and tried an F&P Forma mask, was unsuccessful with that, went back to my old Respironics nasal mask (Swift or Mirage, don't remember which) and am having a problem with mouth leakage. It seems I start releasing air through my lips as I sleep (bothers the wife, not me! LOL) I HAVE tried the full face mask, but due to having facial hair (beard) I get leakage around the mask.
Anyone know of any mouthpiece that would eliminate this? Bear in mind I already USE a chin strap.
Thanks for any help.

I'm just a newbie but I've had success with taping my mouth shut. My husband loves that! I don't know if it would work with your facial hair.

You might look into the CPAP-PRO mask. It uses a boil-n-bite mouthpiece with nasal pillows, and it has no headgear. Check it out here
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

I have facial hair (goatee) and taping works fine for me

Thank you for your suggestions but I'm not using tape as I have a full beard (not goatee), and boil & bite wouldn't help...besides, 20cfm in nasal pillows lead to nose bleeds.
I have actually used the mouthpiece of a swimming snorkel with the tube plugged! That didn't work either.

Maybe it might be worth shaving the beard off in order to stop the leakage?

Just a suggestion.

Another option that I've read about here (have never tried it, myself) is "gluing" your lips together with Poligrip strips. No interference with your beard that way. Just a thought...

I have really bad mouth leakage problem also. My Resp. Therapist recommended that I try using denture adhesive to glue my mouth shut. I have done this for the last three nights and it does seem to help. Have fun getting the glue off of your lips however. LOL. I also use my chin strip with the glue.
