On August 5 I asked the users of this forum two (typo edit sept. 2006) questions:
1. Which was your first mask Respironics or another mask
2. Which is your present mask Respironics or another.
Until today, August 17
46 peple answered the first question, 47% of whom had a Respironics as their first mask (22 people). %52% (24)had another.
45 people answered the second question, 17% of whom use Respironics mask at present (8 people), and 82% (37) who do not.
We do not know who answered the first question and who answered the second. Nor do we know if by chance all those "first" masks were given when Respironics really produced about 50% of masks on the market (if that was ever the case).
IF (and it is a considerable if) half the people on the second poll started out with Respironics, then, only a 1/3of them are still sticking with it.
About 45 votes from 2150 registered users makes this a problematic statement. I don't think we can generalize outside of this group - which is self selected, not necessarily representative of the general population.
But it was interesting to see that the number fall in with the impression we get from reading -
Thanks to all who answered the poll, and wrote.
O.

I'm bumping this up, so we can compare with the new poll being run about a similar subject.

I use a "Hybrid". I use a Resemed Avtiva LT frame with an Activa Cushion as primary and a Resmed Switft LT as backup.

Interesting poll Ozji,
After trying four ResMed's. I'm with the "Others", F&P Nasal Zest is my main mask, & F&P Nasal Zest is my back up.

Re: Mask polls - summary
My first mask, ordered by my sleep doc (more than 10 years ago) was the Respironics gold seal. It was horrible, it leaked, left marks, was probably the wrong size -- you name it. After a few weeks of torture, I got the doc to order a separate titration study, since I slept so poorly during the second half of my original split night study. My second mask was the Sullivan (now called Resmed) mirage mask, recommended by the PSG tech (also an OSA patient) who did my titration study. That mask, an accurate titration, plus the addition of heated humidity (which the PSG tech also recommended) turned cpap from torture into a workable treatment.
Soon after, I discovered the alt.support.sleep-disorder newsgroup on the Internet. This was years before sleep support websites like this one were launched. There I learned about a new mask called the breeze. My sleep doc discouraged me from getting it, but I ordered it out-of-pocket from a mail-order DME, and after a few weeks of working out the adjustments, fell in love with it. About that time I also tried the successor to the Mirage, the Ultra Mirage, which became my backup mask. The breeze has been updated numerous times, but it's still my primary mask.
