WORST NIGHT EVER!

Post by Sleep_P_Bee » Mon May 18, 2009 7:43 pm

Hello, I had my sleep study on April 30th. Didn't sleep worth a darn! After they hooked me up it took several hours until I fell asleep. The sleep tech came in several times after I turned off the lights to adjust the belt around my abdomen since it wasn't registering. Then came in another time to change the box that all the wires hooked in to as apparently it wasn't registering either. Finally fell asleep and It didn't seem long at all before the sleep tech came in and woke me up to hook me up to a nasal mask. Sorry to say, but I wasn't happy to see her and ripped off the mask and said I couldn't wear it. She then hooked me up to a nasal pillow mask that was at least bearable. That is until the titration started. It seemed so hard to keep up with the air! After the tech came in to adjust the mask and another time when I called for her to adjust the mask it was finally about 5:00 am and being totally exhausted I finally drifted off to sleep. I actually remember dreaming just before waking. Went home about 7:00 am totally exhausted and didn't go in to work.

Have just returned from vacation, but had voice message from doc's office. Apparently they turned in a prescription to Praxair so I don't know what type of machine the doc (actually Nurse Practitioner) gave them. I did talk with the nurse at doc's office last Thursday and she indicated that NP did Rx autoPAP. I have asked for a copy of my sleep test. I will call Praxair tomorrow to see what info they can provide.

Before and since sleep test, I've been researching any and all info I can from this forum. I just want to thank all of the wonderful people here for the amazing insightful helpful info for us newbies. There is so much to be aware of to make sure that this is a successful journey in our future health.

Hi,

Did your sleep doctor prepare you at all for the sleep study? I get the impression that you have a misunderstanding of what the sleep study is all about. It isn't to go in and get a good night of sleep, or to spend a day at club med. Rather, it for the technicians to measure different aspects of your sleep and to test different treatment scenarios to hopefully find something that works for you so you can live the rest of your life. Being uncooperative or hostile is only going to make the process take longer and cost more money in the long run. You need to work with the process and not fight it.

No my doctor's office didn't even tell me that I was scheduled for a sleep study--I just received a packet of information from the sleep clinic with a date scheduled for the study.

And, no, I didn't imagine I'd be going to a club med. I am not hostile at all. I guess I'm just frustrated that I don't get any information from the doctor's office.

I will be going to Praxair this afternoon to see what options are available. Since my doctor's office hadn't sent a copy of the sleep study as of yesterday, I may hold off on ordering a CPAP machine until I can see what the report says and post here so one of you veterans can help with what it says.

Thanks!

If you are unsure of what you are getting ... just don't sign anything. If you feel you need to start treatment right away, make sure you tell them you only want to do the minimal rental period required by your insurance policy (usually 1 to 3 months ... call your insurance and find out) and make sure they show you that in writting before signing any papers. Since you found this forum BEFORE getting your equipment, you are way ahead of the DME game.

Sleep studies are hard -- sleeping in strange bed with all that stuff hooked up to you. It sounds like yours was especially difficult. Sorry to hear that. At least that part is over with. Now the real fun begins.

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry you had a hard time, but your night seems fairly typical to what most people that I know went through and about what I experienced. However, consider yourself lucky, I had to endure two nights as is the case for many. First night was the study and a couple of weeks later the second night was the titration. Did not seem like I slept either night. But I sleep MUCH better now. I have only been on the CPAP for a little over a month and I am a TRUE CONVERT now..... Good luck.
