still waking up

Post by Frustrated mary » Wed May 13, 2009 2:20 pm

I've been using cpap for 14days now. From the beginning I have kept it on all night every night. I am still waking up every 45min to an hour all night long. This is the same sleep pattern I had before cpap. I'm using the nasal pillow mask and now even a chin strap. When will I get a good noight sleep? Any help out there for me? Thanks

Hi Mary! I haven't been here long enough to offer you any advice, I wanted to say Hello and bump your post back up. Someone will be along soon, don't get discouraged. I know how it is to be tired and sleep deprived, so I understand your frustration. I am still frustrated, but tonight will be the 7th day on my CPAP and each day seems to get better.

Hang in there!

Hi Mary. It varies from person to person. Some people take to it right away and others take time. I've been using my CPAP for a year and a half and I while I sleep much, much better than before I still don't feel as rested as I think I should. But I think most people will tell you that even with CPAP you may not get as much restful sleep as you'd like.

Anyway, don't stress about it. Give it some time, maybe a few months, and you should see some improvement.

One of the things my doctor said was that we have trained our brains to stay awake so we don't die when we stop breathing and it may take some time for your brain to realize it isn't going to happen and it can relax and go to sleep. To fall asleep try saying over and over to yourself"I continue breathing, I sleep deeply"

Thank you Black Spinner. That makes sense. I was undiagnosed for 15 years. So I have a very strong history of waking up that way. Thank you all for your encouragement. I'm alittle less frustrated now.

I just had my one year anniversary with CPAP. I alternate between "things are pretty good" and "this sucks." Every time I think I've got a handle on chin strap, no chin strap; sleep on right side, sleep on left side, it stops working. I had a horrible couple days when I realized that I had my laptop on and not too far from my head for those days. I turned it off and moved it and I had a much better night last night. As annoying as "sleep hygiene" rules are, I try to abide by them and things often get better. Then I let things slide and so does the quality of my sleep.

Mary,

First of all, you're doing WAY better than many new CPAPers -- being able to kepp your mask on all night! (Hey, I'm glad to hear from someone else who could... I sort of felt like a loner!)

If you aren't already a member of the Forum, you might want to register. (It's free.)

Filling out your profile help us help you. It also saves you from having to tell us what machine you have everytime, and cuts back on us having to ask you before we can answer your questions. Once registered,

1. Look for the User Control Panel, just below the Search box, which is, in turn, just below the CPAPTALK.Com logo.

2. Click on the tab just below the black User Control which says, "Profile."

3. Look to the left, and click on the bar which says, "Edit Equipment."

4. Fill in your equipment, and select "Text" as the display method.

This will help us help you... It's helpful for us to know, for instance, if you have a data capable machine? And, if you have the card reader and software for your machine.
