Sleep Study Abroad??? Medical Tourism

Post by Sleep_question » Tue May 12, 2009 3:08 pm

I just checked a local sleep lab in my East Coast City and a one-night split-study is $3,400. If you need a second night to do the titration, they say the combined bill can be $7,000. My insurance won't cover it.

Here's my question: Are there any good sleep centers in Central America (Costa Rica, for example) that I could go to? I am hesitant to seek medical care out of the US, but a diagnostic test like a sleep study would be safe and save money.

Once I have the test results, would a local DME recognize a foreign prescription and test results? I don't think my local US sleep doctor visits are expensive ($160 each), it is the lab diagnostic work that costs a small fortune when my insurance won't cover it. Having a sleep study done while I'm out of the country could make a vacation cost-effective. Anybody tried this?

A "Split Study" means that the first half of the night it is a Diagnostic Test, and the last half of the night is the Titration. So you won't need an additional night at the sleep lab.

That doesn't always work as planned. My doc ordered a split study but I didn't have a high enough threshold of events to trigger the titration study that first night. So my doc had to review the first study before ordering a second, titration study, which he did.

I do not know the answer to any of the abroad questions.

Have your doc script a make & model specifically that will record data. Check with Ins. they may cover it. If not it still may be cheaper. You can buy a whole lot of equip for $7k

I like the Respironics Aflex or Bipap but they likely won't do a bipap w/o justification. Or buy off of Craigslist, even cheaper. It is doable, esp. if your primary doc will help you.
