CPAP Mask

Post by CarolannG » Sun Aug 14, 2005 2:40 pm

I had a horrible experience with the cpap study last week. I know I have to have one, but I tried for 3 hours to get to sleep with the first mask they had on me. It was too heavy and I felt smothered. The next one was a nasal pillow which was a little better, except for the headgear. I did get a couple hours sleep with that one. I have been looking at masks on internet. Has anyone used the Nasalaire II cannual style or the Respironics ComfortCurve. Just wondering how you get along with either one of these. I haven't yet had the results of the study but should get it this week sometime. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi CarolannG,

Not like taking a pill, is it? I went through a lot of health problems the past three years including open heart surgery, that I kind of looked forward to Apnea treatment. Always had a problem breathing and here was an opportunity to get pure filtered, humidified air pumped into me with little or no effort on my part. Just had to lay back and enjoy. Best part - no damn pills. Already take too many of those!

I'm starting to think - it's been almost six months now I've been on the hose, that it doesn't matter if you have Apnea or not - the treatment is good for you. If you happen to have Apnea so much the better. The treatment will aid your overall health and who knows, maybe the insurance will kick in.

Your first experience has not been a walk in the park. Did you think is was going to be a picnic or what? Apnea is a serious condition that can eventually kill you just like your heart condition. Best thing is that this treatment can also help your heart as well as cure your snoring that everyone has been complaining about over the years. And hey - no pills with all the side effects.

It is strange to have a mask on while trying to go to sleep, especially for the first time. The trick is to get the mask that suits you best and you can really live with. It's a trial and error kind of thing and your medical partners do not always give you the best advice in this regard. Particularly if they are serving a manufacturer master. Do a lot of reading on this forum and see what actual users have to say.

There was an older thread here about what other health problems do Apniacs have. Might be good reading for you. Also check out the frustrations other new users (sounds like a drug habit eh!) have and the tips they have to help cope. It ain't always easy but it is worth it. You know what they say - life sometimes sucks, so why not use a hose to get the full effect.

Really am wishing you well and hope to hear of your continuing experiences. Others on this forum will be able to assist you if you let them but most of all, you can help us and others by sharing your ups and downs.
