Thunderstorm experience... scary!

Post by Nev » Mon Aug 15, 2005 12:47 am

I bought a Xantrex power supply similar to the one described at the following site:

http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/61/p/1/pt/5/product.asp

Haven't had to use it yet. My PB 420E should go for two or three nights on it if necessary - without heater. Heater uses too much juice and apparently the electronic circuit in it could be damaged.

Try searching this board for battery backup, jumpstart, camping etc. for many similar units and other solutions.

Thanks for all the great ideas. You are all super helpful!!

I am going to look at battery operation as a last resort but I am going to contact my electric company to see about having my home tagged.

The electrical stuff worries me I don't know enough about it to feel safe messing with it.

Yawn, I am from Indiana too... if that tag service isn't available maybe we could start a petition to make it happen.
Everything that I have ever done is a pale imitation of what I had in mind...

Only two hours on a 1500 VA UPS! That's what I was afraid of - I had hoped to get much more. Were you running the humidifier through the UPS? What brand/model?
Actually, I was about to jump in the car and go purchase a 1100 VA Belkin. Maybe I'll wait.

Derek,
I was running the humidifier. The VPAP III w/o humidifier is rated at 2 amps according to the back panel. You would probably get a longer runtime if you did use a wall wart and ran at 12V DC versus AC.

If you do buy a UPS, be sure you buy one that allows you to turn off the "on battery" alarm. You will never get back to sleep with the alarm beeping every 30 seconds. My Belkin does not have the option.

I just ordered the Xantrex Xpower 400 as per Nev - $69.99 + $1.00 shipping at Overtstock.com. Lists at $149.99. I use Xantrex equipment a lot on my boat - very high quality stuff. Can't beat that price, and a handy gadget to have around anyway. The only downsides I see are the lowish capacity (21 Ah) and long recharge time - 35 hours from a complete discharge. Xantrex recommend leaving it plugged in all the time, which is good. I intend to run the APAP from the 12v DC, and the humidifier from the wall.

Jordiboy - have you thought about cutting the wire to the beeper? That's the first thing I would do!

Well guys here is my fulltime battery system. I have a GK 420E auto cpap that runs from 13volts (12v nominal system). The 420E uses .75 amps max.

115 amp hr deep cycle battery. $57 a wal mart. Or a Sealed lead acid or gel deep cycle battery . About $100 at a specialty battery outlet.

Schumacher 12 amp smart charger . $45 at Wally World.

Truck accessory outlet with 17 feetof wire. This allows you to move the battery away from the bed or into another room or basement or garage....$ 7 at ...........................Wally World

Auto accessory adaptor with M connector frommmmmmmmmmmmmm

Radio Shack .....Ha HA bet you thought I was going to say Wally world.

Battery box big enough to hold whatever size battery you choose $7 at....................................You guessed it.................Wal Mart

Hook them up. Plug it in. Be sure the charger is set to whatever type of battery you bought. It will take several hours to charge the first time. It will make noise because it has a cooling fan. Thats why I suggest locating it in another room or basement if you can. But if you can't don't worry. It isn't that loud. After the initial charge the charger will trickle charge as needed and run the fan occasionally to condition the battery. Mine has ran for over a year now with no problems. I have tested it for over 2 weeks on battery only to see how long it would run if needed.
