Dream Sleep/No Cpap

Post by Sleepy Boy » Mon Apr 27, 2009 5:58 am

The DME is coming to my house today with different masks for me to try. Last night I didn't take any Ambien, Mirapex, Melatonin. I didn't wear my dentures (like usual) and I didn't try to wear my "leaky" Quattro. I went to bed at 10pm. and woke up at 7am. with only one "pit stop" all night. I was in "dream sleep" all night. It was the best nights sleep I've had in more than a month. I feel "great" this morning. The problem is, I can't understand why it took place like that. I take the Ambien CR and Mirapex almost nightly. My legs were a little nervous at first, but not too bad. I fell asleep right away, and stayed that way all night. Any ideas?? Thanks, Larry..

I doubt if that's something you'd want to do on a regular basis. And, the day ain't over with yet.
You may have lucked out (some nights are better than others). I believe that this therapy "trains" our breathing over time. If you do nasal cleansing, that may have helped, too.

I can usually do short duration naps in my recliner (up to a couple of hours) without my PAP and without consequences (my wife usually reports whether she hears anything with my breathing.....if she's awake). I've trained myself to nose-breathe and keep my mouth shut when napping. But, for whatever reason, I CAN'T sleep in bed without it anymore.

Hi Den: I been going strong all day, but I know your right. The DME guy was here and tried several things on me including the Liberty, I kinda liked that, but without dentures it had to be way too tight. He did find out that I needed a small Quattro instead of the medium. I tried it without my dentures, and it seemed to be good. He also had me hooked up to my machine with the pressure on. He's the first person that seemed to know what he was doing, and was a nice and patient, didn't try to hurry me to make a decision, and checked for leaks on everything. Will know more after tonight. Larry..

I guess I'm going to be one of those people that have to wear their dentures to bed. Last night I tried the new small Quattro, I was wearing the medium. It started out ok, but as soon as I would start to fall asleep, and my face would relax, out came the leaks. I fiddled with it till midnight after going to bed at 10pm. I finally took it off and went without it. Tonight I'm leaving my dentures in and see if that helps. Ya'll gettin' tired of hearing about my teeth & leaky mask yet?? Sorry, but thats where I'm at right now. It wouldn't take a whole lot for me to just give it all up. I've been on cpap since July, and all but a few nights have pretty much "sucked". Seems like something would work. I've had chin straps, tape, denture strips, changed masks, etc. Well enough of the rant, it does get pretty discouraging though.. Thanks, Larry...

Well, I'm very sorry that you're having these problems. But......I'm happy you've posted about it! I have never worn my dentures to bed and never thought about doing so. But all of the CPAP masks have been designed for people with teeth, haven't they? Hmmmmmm............you've given me something to think about here.

What if all of us CPAPer hoseheads who are also toofieless rose up and started a movement? No, not THAT kind of a movement - get your minds out of the bathroom this very instant, do you hear me???!!!

Never really thought about the masks being made for people with teeth..Wonder who's idea that was? Did they think we all had teeth??

Hey Sleepy Boy! Sorry you are still having trouble with your mask. I have my teeth, but when I fall asleep, and my jaw relaxes, my cheeks cave in. When trying to wear a Liberty mask, I had lots of leaks out the sides of the mouth part. Someone suggested I use foam earplugs, and insert them in between the inner and outer seal of the mask, to hold it in place. I only wear the Liberty occasionally, but it does seem to help. You might want to try it. You can take two earplugs, and place the flat ends together, and then put that into the part of the mask where it needs some support. The two seals hold them in place. It might fill in where the teeth would support it, just like it fills in the hollows in my cheeks.

Hope you find something that works!

Seems as though the small Quattro is going to work. I did have to wear the dentures to bed to keep it from leaking. I don't like to do that, and the dentist tells me to get a different mask. But if I can get my sleep with the teeth in & a mask that doesn't leak, then I'm "goin' for it"
