Removal of tonsils old way VS laser?

Post by Gerryk » Fri Apr 10, 2009 12:37 pm

I am supposed to have surgery to fix some issues with my nose and to have my tonsils out which the doctor said are only slightly smaller than a Volkswagen Beetle.

Anyway, I know many of you have had your tonsils removed. Some of you have had the old time tested scapal method and others have had the laser method. What way were yours removed? How long was your recovery and anything else you want to tell that could help out?

This is the age old question, and I don't think the answer has changed. The answer is pain.

Choose between the procedure that hurts and has a raw wound and hurts, and takes 5-10 days of recovery time and hurts, or the procedure that hurts and has a wound that smells of burnt flesh, and hurts, and takes 5-10 days of recovery time and hurts.

I had my mine many years ago, using the burnt flesh technique, the one they said was painless. Since then I have become friends with a number of medicos. They describe it as the surgery you recommend for terrorists, drug dealers, genocidal dicatators and lawyers. And my RT suggested that I should consider a medical negligence claim against the surgeon who did mine

Sorry to scare you, but best to be prepared.

I have had my tonsils removed in the butcher way ( the old fashion one) , and boy... the pain was as my fellow above described, horrible intolerable it is indeed for terrorists, tyrant , lawyers and the pirates of somalia...
However you'll definitly feel alot better, the very sore throat ,the fever , the earache and the fatigue associated with tonsillitis will all diminish...
make sure you stock alot of icecream, yogurt , and juice that is not sour, and the most important thing is the pain killer.

I had my tonsilectomy along with UVPP , in the first three days I was unable to swallow even my own saliva, the latter will gradually accumalte and be trapped inside my mouth , then once my mouth is full of it, all of sudden, the saliva will be pushed into my already dry throat which in turn make me cough and generates the most intolerable pain I've ever so far experienced, this will happen episodically, almost every 15 min, hence I had to keep my mouth open by biting some wrapped soft tissue I also got nylon wrap to cover my pillow...the very next day I'll find myself swimming in a pool of salaiva...

This however did last for 3-4 days in these days I was able to drink only water , after that stayed on creamy diet for almost 2 weeks, I lost 9 pounds within 3 weeks .

I've been told after my surgery that the pain could've been alot less if ever I've had opted for the Laser flesh burning method...!!!????

this is however not to scare but rather to be prepared ...wish you luck and a lot less pain than what I've already been throu...

You might try Coblation Tonsillectomy, out patient surgery, takes about 30 minutes and you go home in two to three hours after surgery. Google coblation tonsillectomy surgery for more information on this less pain full procedure.

The original post is too dated for further replies to help the poster, but if anyone else is facing this situation, the "thermal welding" procedure seems the most benign.

(but as I say - I ain't a grown man, I am a grown great-grandad & so am expecting this to kill me off )

Sorry to hear it, DSM. Please research the newer approaches; you could save yourself considerable pain. As a person who had some recent minor tongue surgery (excising what turned out to be a harmless small tumor), I would enthusiatically recommend eliminating as much pain as possible.
