Well, my CPAP crapped out on me the other day so called my provider to get a replacement. They set up an appointment for me. Went in and they won't replace it without doing another sleep study! I can't believe it. Is this true? My insurance has chanted since before and with my high deductable I'll probably have to shell out $3K out of my pocket just for the study if I remember the costs from 2005. I mean, I've had zero problems with my therapy which they can see by their download of my card. I just can't believe I'm going to have to go through this all over again just to get a new machine. Any experience or advice anybody can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hmmm. That's ridiculous that your insurance insists on a new sleep study. If they insist and if it would really cost you $3k, you could pay for the CPAP yourself and save a bundle. I down't know how good the online CPAP stores are, but I just checked out
https://www.cpap.com, and a new Respironics REMStar like I just got through Quest, would be about $1000 including humidifier.
Does one need a doctor's prescription to buy a CPAP?

You could try selling your new or barely-used masks at
http://www.cpapauction.com, or sell the mask parts on eBay. Occasionally, someone on the forum offers to trade one mask for another. Or you could donate them to a nonprofit organization called Awake In America, which provides free CPAP equipment (and sleep studies) to those in need. Here are their mask donation guidelines:

Yes, a prescription is required by law. For masks too. That doesn't seem to stop people from selling on Craigslist, though.

Mike - thanks for the response. I'm not sure if the insurance is the culprit yet but my doctor is telling me that my insurance won't authorize a new machine without a new sleep study, but I know they haven't even contacted them yet. I plan on calling my insurance today to find out what the truth is. Another question, can these machines be repaired? Thanks!
