Swift LT Pillow 'Hole' Sizes

Post by cpapsue » Wed Apr 08, 2009 1:25 pm

I don't know what to call the openings into your nose from the pillows - but, here's my question.

I have both the small and medium pillows. The pillow itself on the small fits fine, but I like the air flow on the medium since it allows for more air and makes me feel as though there is nothing obstructing the flow.

If the holes aren't the same size, how is the pressure regulated consistently? Can you safely adjust the size yourself?

Comments appreciated!

Hello Cpapsue, you might try just cutting the tip off the small pillow and see if that gives you more air flow.

SharperJudy - I've had that feeling quite a bit also. I wake up enough to jiggle it and it feels better.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

First question is whether there is a reason you don't just use the Medium pillow?
But here's at least the one major link I remember on the subject of clipping the edges:

I'd like to know that also...I looked at the pictures and wondered how easy it would be to sleep on your side. I sleep on my sides just about all the time I'm sleeping and it seems the tube would be a little or a lot "lumpy".

I just DO. They aren't uncomfortable to me, and they don't squish and cut off my air, either. Other members here do, too. I can't explain. Get on the Test Drive and find out whether you can, too.

Hi, I have been away and have been missing many of these interesting threads. Have you tried it yet? Not seeing this thread, I had independently started experimenting with enlarging the nozzle size. My reason was that I wanted to reduce the force the air hitting my septum -- I had developed a minor wound there (this has been cauterized recently), but I think the air jet is the reason for my problem.

But when I started using SwiftLT about 6 months ago, I had thought small was the best fit, but at my very low 4cm pressure, I had the same feeling you experience. Since then I had changed to the medium, and then to the LARGE and with minor strap pressure adjustments it fits just as well now.

Cpapuse, IMO, you do not what to enlarge that outer hole because most likely it would reduce the nice sealing effect SwiftLT has. The swift LT uses the air pressure to auto seal to the snares. What you need is to enlarge the inner tube. To make the cutting easier you can turn the entire nasal cushion inside out! First soak it in warm water, and turn it inside while warm in the water. Now you would see that you can easily cut the inner tube rim off with a pair of scissors. IMO, that inner tube is too restrictive, I do not think it needs to be that long at all. If your cut is not smooth and well rounded, you might hear whistling noises in operation. I snipped a very tiny amount off yesterday, without any bad effects. I do have a backup mask

cpapsue, I finally trimmed the end of the inner wall tube about 2 to 3 millimeters a few days ago. I can report no ill effects such as noise. I used small sharp scissors in my procedure described in the previous step. As for the benefits of this in my case --- remember I was already using the large pillows -- not obvious in the short term. I think the air jet hitting the septum is a little softer now, and will find out if this helps with tendency to wound the septum surface only after a month or so. I was being conservative, now I wish I had snipped off a couple of mm longer
