New OSA Treatment Option

Post by Snorebert » Tue Mar 31, 2009 9:45 am

Folks,
I was able to get an advanced copy of the press release below. I was going to hold it until the official release date but I will be on the road and disconnected then.
New Twist on Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Los Angeles, April 1/HHNewswire -- A Southern California plastic surgeon has developed a procedure that promises to aid millions of sufferers of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is a medical condition that causes the patient to have multiple interruptions in breathing while asleep. This causes constant fatigue in the patient and can lead to high blood pressure and even death.

Traditional therapy for OSA patients is the use of a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device. The CPAP provides a continuous flow of air that forces the airway to remain open, allowing the patient to sleep more soundly.

The primary problem with this therapy has been that the facemask that the patient straps on is seldom a perfect fit for his or her face. Air that leaks out from the mask is annoying to the patient and reduces the effectiveness of the therapy. It often causes the patient to eventually give up on the therapy.

Dr. Alfred F. Day, F.A.C.S. of Orange County, CA has developed a procedure that he says will overcome the leaking mask problem. Dr. Day performs what he calls “CPAP sculpting” to actually alter the patient’s face to properly fit the CPAP mask. “Tiny grooves, almost imperceptible to the naked eye, are carved into the patient’s face to allow the CPAP masks to fit snugly and securely. Low areas of the patient’s face can also be built up with the injections of tiny amounts of skin cells from the patient’s leg. This all creates a perfect, leak-free fit for the CPAP mask.”

The experimental procedure, developed in partnership with a new CPAP mask manufacturer, Snoozel, Inc. has been tested successfully on over 20 patients and Dr. Day predicts that FDA approval should be forthcoming by year end.

Inquiries should be directed to Dr A.F.Day (as in April Fools Day)
Happy April Fools Day to all you hoseheads! (And I hope that I don't get banned from the forum for this joke.)

Man, I was appalled that someone would get plastic surgery to make their mask fit better, then I realized SOME PEOPLE WOULD DO THIS, and became concerned, and then I read April Fool's Day.

WHEW!!!!!!

Good one!

Babette said she was appalled someone would have plastic surgery done so a mask would fit properly. Just think of all the people who tape or glue their mouth shut, tape their pillows in place on the nasal pillows, tie their mask down to their face with shoe strings, wrap naylons around their head and oh yeah use poly grip all to get a seal. That is only the short list of things we hoseheads have tried. These people are all as desperate as I and the next one are to succeed at CPAP and most will try anything because they know what will happend if they aren't successful with cpap.

I am not bashing anyone, if I was I wouldn't get past myself. That was kind of funny.

Yeah, well, I was appalled, and then I immediately knew three people who would sign up on the spot for it.

I really feel for folks who can't get a decent fit. I'm a lucky girl, but my luck isn't for everyone. I know. I send out my mask and chinstrap to anyone who asks, and only about 1/4 of the people who try it like it.

I still think it seems silly to surgically alter your face to fit a mask. I think a custom-fit mask would be a better idea. Or oral surgery or some sort.

Cheers,
B.

Actually the inspiration for this joke was when I got to thinking that I have custom fitted hearing aids from a mold taken of my ears. I have crowns on my teeth made from impressions made of my teeth and I have a dental appliance made from a mold taken. I even have a car that readjusts to my body when I step in. Yet the population with sleep problems must buy their masks off the shelf. And keep buying them it hopes that one will actually see them through the night.

i can't imagine having to buy anything that is absolutely critical to fit properly by guessing at it - yet that is exactly what I, and most of you, have done. From the chatter on the forum here, it seems that the DME is the closest thing we have to a matchmaker yet many seem to be inept or indifferent.

It really bothers me to read about so many people struggling to get their lives back in order only to have one of the biggest obstacles be a dumb piece of plastic! There should be a better way.

Sorry for venting on the day before my favorite holiday.

And thanks for not banning me (except for Sharkbait)!

So, still tied to xPAP...just a different mask solution?

Wonder if my insurance would cover the surgery. Of course, I've thought that finding a mask wouldn't be so hard if I didn't have such a big nose....
