I found this bit of information quite interesting...amazing how CPAP can be used on premature babies, CPAP is truly one of those great developments of medicine:
Nasal CPAP/Neonatal
CPAP machines are also being used in neonatal units around the world, both with conventional respirator CPAP and bubble CPAP. CPAP has proven to be an affective modality for neonates with complications, particularly respiratory complications, and for premature babies.
The CPAP machine pushes air through to the lungs despite congestion or minor obstruction and helps develop proper lung function and rhythm. CPAP may also act as a stent for upper airways preventing collapse and obstruction. Neonatal CPAP is far less invasive than intubation and far less likely to contribute to complications.

I used to be an OB nurse=and we had a Level III Neonatal Nursery- I remember we started using CPAP on infants in the early 80s (as well as I can remember). It gives many a preemie a fighting chance- lung function is one of their biggest challenges.
