Another Curiosity Poll: Referred, Recommended or Researched

Post by kteague » Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:40 pm

Was reading a new member's post who thanked the person who recommended this site to them. Was wondering how many ended up here that way, or if it was thru medical referral or personal research.

My sleep doc. He's really a nice guy. I don't see him very often. He's very busy.

I've been a member of numerous online groups since 1998. I knew there had to be something out there for cpap patients, and just went surfing for it. On my first hit I landed here and haven't felt the need to visit those "other" sites other than for curiousity. Found them far inferior to this one, so I just stayed here.

Cheers,
B.

Probably what will turn out to be a common story - no real help from medical industry, either the sleep centre or the doctor , so found this site searching around on line . Never tried or even read another, never felt the need to. A silent lurker a lot of the time, happy to put my two cents in when needed. Thanks to DSM, Snoredog, Babette, Rested Gal, Rooster et al comfortable and happy with my therapy, pressure tweaking & monitoring, but still more often than not the helped rather than the helper at this stage!

...surfing after sleep study, and before DME provider brought the goods out here......luckily, my doc hooked me up, which I was able to confirm from reading here!!

I'm mostly just reading and learning, as I have little experience yet and have encountered blessed few real problems. I am grateful for input when I do have questions...thanks everyone!!

CPAPTalk really is the best.

I am an active member of another very active forum. There is a Sleep Study thread there. When I talked about being diagnosed, one of the other partcipants recommended this site as I have since done with others in the same thread.

The sleep center I got diagnosed at sent me to that other forum of which I will not name and I lurked there for about a week and decided to Google for other sleep apnea forums and found this one. It was much more lively and active so I joined this one ... I'm lucky sometimes.

My wife recommended me -

One day she said - "I can't sleep when you stop breathing - go get it fixed or I'll kill you!".

DSM

(actually she really was very much politer than that - she suggested a sleep study )
xPAP and Quattro std mask (plus a pad-a-cheek anti-leak strap)

Right about this time.....four years ago, I was researching as much as I could about Sleep Apnea and the equipment to treat it. My sleep study was on 03/29/05 ......and I was "studying" for it. In the process, I checked out the prices on several online suppliers and naturally CPAP.COM. On their front page, there was a link to CPAPTALK.COM so I clicked on it and started reading......and kept reading. By the time I got through the sleep study and doctors appointments, I was narrowing down what I thought I wanted. I found out I didn't need bi-level therapy, so that simplified things. With Becky's help at CPAP.COM, I got things finalized and ordered (REMstar Pro 2, Encore Pro and my UMFF, among other things). Through the next few months, I followed Derek's development of "MyEncore" and downloaded it and started using it to record my progress with statistics.
Finally, in July, I decided to join the forum. By that time, this place had become sort of like "Cheers" (where everybody knows your user name ).....and it seemed like a comfortable place to hang out.....with very knowledgeable people to learn from.

Den (still trying to pay it forward and thanking all of those who came before me and shared their knowledge)

I was told about this site by Ted (Titrator) who was working for cpap.com and was helping get "cpaptalk" started.

Long before cpaptalk started, I had been active for a couple of years on another site (moderately censored) -- talkaboutsleep.com -- having migrated to TAS from a heavily censored site (sleepnet.com) I had yahoo-found over five years ago. I had been pretty satisfied with TAS and learned a lot there, but when I saw the greater freedom that was allowed on cpaptalk, I soon started spending all my "apnea talk" time on cpaptalk.

Good way to put it, Den! Other people who were on TAS back when I was, are here -- ozij, -SWS, and others. Even Snoredog used to be on TAS regularly, under the guest nickname of "dizzy."

Very glad Ted told me about cpaptalk!

I found cpaptalk a short while after I found talkaboutsleep. I was very happy to see Rested Gal and -SWS here - had gotten to know their posts on TAS. Eventually I found myself spending more and more time here - and less (by now its none...) there. But talkaboutsleep was really very good for me as a newbie - and I was a newbie here too.

That was 4 years ago

Would anyone mind saving me some google time, and explaining what "Cheers" is?
Thanks
O.
